Art Foundation Studio Teaching Assistant (non-benefited)

Summary

The VCUarts Qatar Art Foundation program seeks 4 dependable, creative, and collaborative studio assistants for the 2025–2026 academic year. These are a 24-hour-per-week positions ideal for a recent graduate or emerging artist/designer looking to gain experience in a university-level teaching environment. This position supports all four studio tracks in the Art Foundation curriculum: Drawing, Surface, Space, and Time. Candidates should be comfortable working across disciplines, using a mix of digital, material, and time-based processes. Responsibilities include providing technical assistance, supporting faculty in the classroom, documenting student work, and contributing to the maintenance of a productive and organized studio culture. The role also involves participation in departmental tasks such as reorganizing common areas, including faculty offices, the materials cage, and shared storage spaces. Applicants must be responsible, mature, and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in the Woodshop, DDF, and Adobe Creative Suite is essential.

This is a non-sponsored hourly position with no benefits. Applicants must have a valid residence permit and currently live in Qatar.  Preferences will be given to VCU alumni.

Reports to: Studio Faculty of Record and the Art Foundation Department Chair

Major Activities & Essential Functions

  • Assists with setup, cleanup, and daily upkeep of classroom, studio spaces, common areas in the shared office space
  • Documents student work and classroom activity, including process and outcomes
  • Maintains attendance records and support communication with students
  • Provides one-on-one or small group technical support during studio sessions
  • Supports software, camera, lighting, and printing needs as required
  • Participates in project development, including research and preparation of visual materials
  • Assists in the maintenance and use of shop and lab equipment (Woodshop, DDF, AV gear)
  • Contributes to the documentation and archiving of student projects and department events
  • Assists in the maintenance and use of the shared materials stored in the departmental cage
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Fine Arts, Design, or a related field
  • Strong working knowledge of software and especially Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere)
  • Hands-on skills with tools and equipment in the Woodshop and/or DDF
  • Familiarity with digital documentation, including photography and scanning
  • Responsible, organized, and capable of working independently

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting creative instruction or mentorship
  • Familiarity with basic video, sound, or time-based media workflows
  • Interest in interdisciplinary approaches to art and design education
  • Experience with social media content creation and/or digital publishing
