The Hero's Journey is a visual narrative depicting the everyday life of someone with mental health struggles. This BFA project includes the creation and visualization of a unique personal story that is directed toward a universal audience. The hero communicates that perseverance, tenacity, persistence, courage and bravery are required for growth— emphasizing that giving up is the last option.
This research explores how design can be harnessed to not only to foster self-esteem and cultivate emotional resilience but also to promote societal changes through awareness and inclusion. Mental Health is a topic that can still be considered taboo in many cultures. The pandemic has shown that many of us have experienced new levels of stress, anxiety, fear, sadness, and loneliness. During the last two years, mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression, have increased. The Hero’s Journey sheds insight on how to navigate.
I believe art and design should contribute to societal change both through art therapy as well through design activism. Everyone's inner Hero needs reminding that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Our world is always better when inclusive and compassionate.
