FPP01) Drawing Humans

A beginner’s level class for basics of figure drawing, where students will learn how to visually deconstruct human figures into basic geometric forms, to understand how the body is anatomically connected, and how it all parts work in relation to one another. The aim of the class is to help students to be able to draw the human figure as anatomically accurate as possible in a variety of stationary or moving poses, utilizing the techniques taught in each session.

Class Outline

First session: Deconstruction, reconstruction, and frame:

• Deconstruction of the human figures into abstract 3D geometrical shapes.
• Drawing the frame of the figure.
• Drawing the human skeleton.
• Standing poses.
• Last 30 - 20 min of the session, the class will assemble to discuss their experience of the session.

Second Session: Muscles:

• Practice drawing human muscles.
• Drawing stationary poses.
• Last 30 - 20 min of the session, the class will assemble to discuss their experience of the session.

Session objective:
• Students to understand how the human body moves, the relation of all its parts to
one another, how they function separately and together.
• How they are perceived in space, as in drawing them from different perspectives.

Third Session: Drawing from reference:

• Students will bring image references of real people/ fictional characters from media (preferably live-action movies/ semi-realistic style), and apply the techniques learned in the previous sessions to draw said character/ subject.

• Last 30 - 20 min of the session, the class will assemble to discuss their experience of the session.

Fourth Session: Drawing with no reference:

• Utilizing the techniques from previous sessions, students should be able to draw a variety of figure poses.
• Last 30 - 20 min of the session, the class will assemble to discuss their experience of the session.

Items to buy for this class

• Pencil (B - 8B graphite)
• Charcoal
• Eraser (rubber and/ or putty) and sharpener
• A3 and/ or A4 sketchbooks (or larger but not smaller than A4)
• Colored pencils
• Optional drawing markers

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Nourbanu Feras Hijazi

Nourbanu Hijazi is an artist, designer, illustrator, and educator. Her work mainly explores the human condition, specifically internal conflicts and mortality, examining these elements from a philosophical and psychological perspective through surreal and mythological themes created by a combination of analog and digital processes.

She graduated with an MA in Gallery and Museum Practice, from University College London. MFA in Design, from Virginia Commonwealth University of the Arts in Qatar, Qatar, 2018. BFA in Fine arts and Design, University of Sharjah, UAE, 2015.
