DESCRIPTION:أغرب إدراك | Aghrab Idrāk: Thresholds of Perception is a collateral program consisting of an exhibition and symposium that explore perception\, mobility\, and cultural exchange as relational and situated modes of inquiry. Bringing together artists\, designers\, curators\, and researchers from VCUarts Qatar and international partner institutions\, the program considers how creative practice generates knowledge through sensory experience\, material investigation\, and interdisciplinary dialogue in public discourse. \nStructured as a sequence of spatial thresholds\, the exhibition invites visitors to move through environments shaped by light\, sound\, movement\, and material interaction. Meaning emerges gradually through sensory encounters\, spatial relations\, and changing conditions of perception. \nThe exhibition features projects from research labs within the Institute for Creative Research at VCUarts Qatar\, forming a landscape of intersecting approaches rather than a single narrative. Together\, the works reflect the Gulf region’s long histories of exchange\, mobility\, and layered cultural memory. The projects approach research not as fixed conclusions\, but as evolving propositions — experiential\, negotiated\, and emergent. \nExtending this ethos\, the symposium Relational Ecologies: Perception\, Mobility\, and Collective Form convenes artists\, designers\, curators\, and researchers from VCUarts\, VCUarts Qatar\, and Qatar Museums. Across multiple sessions examining collaboration\, perception\, and translocal circulation\, the symposium explores how practice and research generates knowledge through exchange and collective inquiry. SUMMARY:Fanoon Artist Talks
DESCRIPTION:Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art\, in collaboration with VCUarts Qatar\, presents Fanoon (Arabic for ‘arts’)\, a new public lecture series and university seminar bringing internationally renowned artists into dialogue with audiences and students in Doha. \nThe series features four distinct research-led practices: Rayyane Tabet’s work with archives and the built environment; Bahar Noorizadeh’s exploration of digital and financial infrastructures; Shuddhabrata Sengupta’s practice of collective knowledge production with Raqs Media Collective; and Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti’s decolonial spatial practice with Decolonizing Architecture Art Research (DAAR). The public lecture series is presented in partnership with Qatar Creates Talks\, expanding opportunities for audiences in Doha to engage with international artists\, ideas and contemporary creative practice. \nEach participating artist will deliver a public lecture at Mathaf’s Makan Auditorium. Under the theme حَوِّل (Hawwil)\, meaning “transmit\,” this year’s Tasmeem Doha centers knowledge as a trust\, and showcases how it is shared between generations and reinterpreted through creative practice. \n  \n\nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, VCUarts Qatar has made the decision to cancel the Tasmeem Workshops and Knowledge Circle.  \nWorkshops and Knowledge Circle | November 1–4\nVarious locations at VCUarts Qatar \nWorkshops will explore pattern design and archives\, printmaking and digital tools\, alongside experimental approaches to materials and making. DESCRIPTION:  \nA project by MODEEN within Arab Design Now\, with research developed in collaboration with AlBokeh\, a research lab within VCUarts Qatar’s Institute for Creative Research \n  \n\n  \nArab Design Now 2026 will offer deeper insight into the contexts and thought processes that shape design\, placing equal emphasis on both outcome and process. It will serve as a reflection and exploration of design against the backdrop of geography\, urbanism\, technology\, and political change. DESCRIPTION:Curated by Basma Hamdy\, Professor of Graphic Design at VCUarts Qatar and Principal Investigator of TypeAraby\, a research lab within VCUarts Qatar’s Institute for Creative Research\, and Ali Asali\, a multidisciplinary designer\, visual artist and founder of StudioMetaphor.  \n  \n\n  \nThe project emphasizes the interconnectivity and relationality of typography as a symbolic representation of language and its complex\, networked attachment to existential and experiential modes of being and knowing. \nIt presents a fresh perspective on contemporary design from the MENASA region—disentangled from commercial and capitalist systems—and honors traditional practices and heritage that are often marginalized or misunderstood. \nBeyond the Letters explores the hidden dimensions of Arabic and Persian typography.
