SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture by Taekyeom Lee
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 5 at 12:45pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nThursday\, February 7 at 4:00pm: Qatar National Library (QNL) \nTechnological convergence and digital manufacturing processes using computer numerical controls have broadened creative possibilities and the perception of the three-dimensional experience for artists and designers. In this interactive lecture\, Taekyeom Lee will share not only the success and failure of the toolmaking process\, but his ongoing research efforts to develop\, test\, and find the place of the emerging technologies in creative practices. He explores unconventional materials and digital methods to graphic design to create 3D type\, graphics\, and even designed objects to combine digital and physical experiences. \nThe explorations are engaged with tangible experience assisted and/or created with various digital controls. Digital fabrication techniques play a crucial role in turning intangible ideas into tangible design products\, also become an agent to build the strong connection between analog and digital environments. For his research\, he built custom tools for his research including 3D printers and paste extruders to produce 3D ceramic type and objects as a ceramic 3D printer was not affordable or accessible. \nTaekyeom Lee is an interdisciplinary artist although he prefers to introduce himself as a designer using artist’s material and artistic sensibility. He is currently an Assistant professor of Graphic Design at Appalachian State University in Boone\, NC. He received an MFA degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research explores 3D type as a series of typographic explorations to strive challenges and seek a new way to create tangible letterforms in three-dimensional space. Taekyeom Lee’s research has drawn interest nationally and internationally. \nThe Crossing Boundaries Lecture Series is an initiative of VCUarts Qatar. SUMMARY:Comfort Zone I (Home)
DESCRIPTION:Comfort zones are forms of concessions which we allow ourselves in times of global political uproar\, violent conflicts\, economic instability and in an era of increasing numbers of natural disasters. However\, to be comfortable is mostly a privilege that comes with the right amount of wealth and access to education and is often linked to other determinant factors such as race\, gender or nationality. The exhibition curated by Daniel Berndt reflects on comfort on different levels taking the notion of home and privacy as a point of departure. Bringing together the works of three international artists from different artistic backgrounds it addresses the comfort zone quite literally\, as an allegory for the nation state and the establishment of borders or a form of escapism\, as an (imaginary) place to which we want to retreat from the often overwhelming reality of our everyday life. \nA panel discussion moderated by Dr. Bahaa Abudaya\, Curator of Contemporary Art at Doha Fire Station Museum with artists Al Gharaballi and Shahbazi and curator Berndt will take place at the VCUarts Atrium at 6pm before the opening reception at the Gallery at 7pm. \nRegular opening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday – Closed \nMore information about the artists and curator: \nBasma Alsharif is an artist/filmmaker who was born in Kuwait of Palestinian origin\, and raised between France\, the US and the Gaza Strip. She works between cinema and installation\, centering on the human condition in relation to shifting geopolitical landscapes and natural environments. \nKhalid al Gharaballi is a Kuwaiti artist who is based in Kuwait City. After first establishing an artistic collaboration with fellow Kuwaiti artist and musician Fatima Al Qadiri based in New York City\, he relocated to Kuwait City in 2012 to help co-found the artist collective GCC. His solo work centers on documenting the urban and domestic landscapes of his native Kuwait. \nSetareh Shahbazi is an Iranian artist who is based in Berlin. Her solo shows were held at Tarahane Azad\, Tehran; Gypsum Gallery\, Cairo; 98weeks Project Space\, Beirut; Contemporary Arts Forum\, Santa Barbara; Galerie Sfeir-Semler\, Hamburg; Montgomery\, Berlin and at Karlsruher Kunstverein. \nThe exhibition has been curated by Daniel Berndt\, whose writing has appeared in Ibraaz\, Springerin\, Aperture and Frieze\, amongst other publications. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, which has been led by Layla Bacha\, Art Specialist and Nour Elbasuni\, Coordinator at Qatar Foundation\, puts together two projects created at VCUarts Qatar. \nThe Modern Prayer Rugs exhibit represents a culmination of the design journey of six finalists who entered the VCUarts Qatar Materials Library Modern Prayer Design Competition in 2017. This exhibition was inspired by the creative vision of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. The six rugs being exhibited represent the finalists of the Modern Prayer Rug Design Competition which was hosted by the Materials Library at VCUarts Qatar. \nThe competition challenged students from across Qatar to submit concept designs that reimagined the Islamic prayer rug using traditional or unconventional materials\, while honoring the richness and the values of Islamic culture and heritage. The six finalists\, selected on the overall strength of their concepts\, had the opportunity to work with the professional staff and collections of VCUarts Qatar’s Materials Library to produce the six rug prototypes for an exhibition. The ‘Modern Prayer Rug’ exhibition features six beautiful and creative prayer rugs that demonstrate innovative uses of materials and functional design elements\, and was presented for the first time at Company House\, Msheireb Downtown Doha in the Fall of 2017. \nThe designers included: Aaqifa Altaf\, Ahmed Al Nowfal\, Maryam Al Semaitt\, May Makia\, Nawar Al Mutlaq\, Mohammad Yasin Arafat\, Neihan Yaqoob\, Sidra Sohail and Sultana Jesmine. \nThe Modern Felted Prayer Rugs were handmade in the Netherlands by students and faculty from the MFA in Design program at VCUarts Qatar. Wispy wool fibers—when agitated with soap and water—tangle and blend to form a non-woven textile called felt. The ancient process requires careful observation and keen sensory awareness. With deliberate movement and attention to the strands of wool\, the material transforms before one’s eyes. It is a natural alchemy; out of many\, one. \nEach year students and faculty from the MFA in Design program at VCUarts in Qatar travel together to participate in an immersive learning experience—their annual field study. They travel outside the Gulf region to benefit from specialized knowledge and innovative processes\, while maintaining a cultural link to Qatar through the design outcomes they produce. It is a strategic fusion of old and new\, students and faculty\, foreign and familiar. \nThe 2017 field study included a five-day workshop in Oldeberkoop\, the Netherlands. Students and faculty each designed and felted a modern prayer rug. The modern felted prayer rugs explore the following themes: modernity (impact of advanced materials and technologies on the act of fabrication)\, tactility\, surface\, depth\, function\, portability\, comfort\, durability\, and cultural resonance. \nThe designers included: Majdulin Nasrallah\, Mariam Rafehi\, Rabab Abdulla\, Rabeva Khatoon and Yasmeen Suleiman. \nA special thanks to Hawar Textile Institute and Qatar Foundation. \nImage credit: Modern felted prayer rug\, Yasmeen Suleiman\, 2017.

Boyson’s directorial credits include “Rammellzee: It’s Not Who But What” (2018)\, “The Six Sides of Katharine Hepburn” (2018) and the globe-trotting\, collaborative documentary “The Future of Cities” (2017). SUMMARY:Living Meshes
DESCRIPTION:Living Meshes is an interdisciplinary exhibition where lived experiences are in constant exploration within different processes which are activated by the visitor. These art pieces explore experimental processes and challenge conventional viewpoints\, they also activate relational methods that will provoke the audience to look at the living world in Mexico and Qatar in different ways. \nThe exhibition activates interdisciplinary art processes where the audience can touch\, be part of the art work\, draw\, create 3D printed objects\, smell\, and leave traces in the gallery. At the same time\, it creates worlds across individuals\, species and scales\, and how they are tending toward the flickering of interdisciplinary artistic processes. \nSiglinde Langholz\, an interdisciplinary artist from Puebla\, Mexico. She is a candidate for an interdisciplinary PhD at the University of Maine. Langholz is the recipient of several grants and awards including the Immediations SSHRC research grant from the University of Concordia\, Montreal\, Canada; the University of Maine´s 2011 – 2012\, Ana Mendieta Art Fellowship\, and in 2010\, a fellowship from the state government of Puebla\, Mexico. \nThe opening of the exhibition will take place in the presence of the artist. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday – Closed \nImage courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Cirque du Soleil: Innovation & Collaboration at the Heart of Costume Creation
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 9 at 12:45pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nThursday\, October 11 at 6:00pm: Qatar National Library \nIn this Crossing Boundaries lecture\, two of Cirque du Soleil’s key creatives will take us behind the scenes of Cirque du Soleil’s highly regarded costume workshop that each year produces the thousands of intricately designed and highly advanced costumes that are key to its success. Denise Tétreault\, the Director of Specialities\, Development & Innovation at Cirque du Soleil\, and Mark DeCoste\, an Assistant Designer from Cirque du Soleil will discuss the creative processes for costume design that are at the heart of everything that Cirque du Soleil’s acclaimed workshop stands for. \nEmerging from its humble beginnings in Quebec in 1984 as a group of 20 street performers\, Cirque du Soleil has reinvented circus arts and grown to become a world-renowned leader in live entertainment\, enthralling more than 180 million spectators from 450 cities in 60 countries from across six continents. Cirque du Soleil’s spectacular mix of artistry\, theatrics and designs combine the skills of 1\,300 artists from more than 50 different countries together with a combined staff of 4\,000 to produce content for a broad range of audacious projects. \nDenise Tétreault\, Director – Specialities\, Development & Innovation\, Cirque du Soleil \nDenise Tétreault joined Cirque du Soleil in 1991. She collaborated with costume designer Dominique Lemieux on multiple shows\, including Fascination\, Nouvelle Expérience\, Saltimbanco\, Mystère\, Alegria\, Quidam\, “O” et La Nouba. She began as a seamstress and later worked as a buyer. The growing success of Cirque du Soleil led to Denise being mandated to create a supply department for its costume workshop\, where she worked as an assistant to designers such as François Barbeau (Dralion) and Eiko Ishioka (Varekai). This in turn led to the establishment of a research and development department that catered to the costume workshop’s increasing demands for new materials and techniques as Cirque du Soleil’s shows became ever more spectacular. From 2006 to today\, she worked as the director of the creative department for the costume department which produced up to three new shows a year. It now has more than 350 employees. \nMark DeCoste\, Assistant Costume Designer at Cirque du Soleil \nMark DeCoste has more than 25 years experience in costume design. Besides working with the creative team at Cirque du Soleil\, he has also worked among the most renowned theater and dance companies in Canada\, Ex Machina\, the Met Opera\, Citadel Theatre\, Franco Dragone Productions and the Vienna State Opera. At Cirque du Soleil he supervises the entire process of costume design at the creative department\, from conception and design to creation and completion. As seamster\, cutter\, instructor\, coordinator or assistant\, his team player qualities and generosity in sharing his knowledge is well recognized in the costume community. SUMMARY:Younès Rahmoun: Little Worlds\, Complex Structures
DESCRIPTION:Younès Rahmoun: Little Worlds\, Complex Structures triangulates three works exploring positions of agency and being in the world. In Jabal-Hajar-Turab #10 (2018) the artist looks outwards to the Rif mountains in Morocco where he is from\, exploring the connection between the natural organic materials of the earth and their role in the construction of collective identity and belonging. As a space for individual meditation Markaba (2016) is a geometric sculpture of six pyramids that draws on science and spirituality in its construction and meaning\, riffing on the logic of the camera obscura\, opening to the universe from its interior. In the video Khamsa (2011) the creative act is staked as an active position of engagement with the social and political urgencies of the world. \nIn these works\, natural organisms\, geometry\, and creative expression are called on as new materials and forms to give shape to ways of seeing and imagining constellations of small worlds and complex structures in daily life and the universe. DESCRIPTION:Leekyung Kang has navigated the structural framework and “bone/skeleton” of infrastructure in urban landscapes since 2014. By exploring spatial surfaces\, such as construction sites and scaffolding structures\, Kang leverages architectural imagery with mixed media. SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lectures: Dice Kayek
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 2 at 7pm: Fire Station Cinema \nTuesday\, April 3 at 1pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nCreating contradictory sensations through the usage of opposing ideas\, forms and fabrics has always been Dice Kayek’s modus operandi. Their approach to fashion is shaped by their research of impossible unions\, and to find minimal\, yet meaningful ways to combine the unexpected. “Istanbul Contrast”\, inspired by and dedicated to Sublime Porte’s harmonious contradictions\, is the culmination of this research. In 2013\, Dice Kayek won the Jameel Prize 3\, an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic traditions\, for its Istanbul Contrast exhibition\, which was hosted by the Victoria & Albert Museum. The result of such prestigious praise led to the launch of fully-fledged couture collections including Woven Tales\, Nocturne 54\, Dollhouse and Winter Garden. \nAfter almost two decades since Ayse and Ece Ege founded Dice Kayek\, they felt the urge to go beyond the temporality of fashion and look deeper into their primal source of fascination: Istanbul\, an indefinable city belonging neither to the West nor to the East\, blending the wisdow of traditions and a flair for modernity. Characterized by its magically coexisting contrasts\, they were wondering how they could translate Istanbul’s rich architectural\, cultural and religious diversity into couture. \nDice Kayek was launched in 1992 by sisters Ece and Ayse Ege and over the past two decades has built a reputation for its carefully curated universe\, one in which tradition combines with modernity\, film\, art and personal memories to inform its designs which are inspired by using architectural lines to build strong\, structural silhouettes. A modern take on couture\, creativity\, detail and craftsmanship underpins the Turkish heritage brand\, which is based in Paris and became part of the Federation Francaise de la Couture in 1994. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 27 at 1pm \nJourneying through the profession of design\, Giovanni Innella meets and collaborates with craftsmen\, designers\, artists and a variety of other people. Every project is not only an effort to create something together with them\, but a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about his or her craft\, about who he or she is. Besides telling about the different projects\, this presentation introduces the various characters that have been part of Giovanni’s story. \nGiovanni Innella studied Industrial Design at the Politecnico of Torino (Italy)\, Conceptual Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and obtained a PhD in Design Critique from Northumbria University (UK). In his career\, Giovanni exhibited at the International Design Biennale of Saint-Etienne and the Fuorisalone of Milan among other venues. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands). Currently Giovanni is based in Tokyo where he runs his own practice and occupies the position of an Assistant Professor at the Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology (Tokyo Metropolitan University).

DESCRIPTION:One of the founders of the Black Arts Movement and longtime Indianapolis resident\, Evans published her first work Where Is All the Music in 1968 followed by I Am a Black Woman in 1970. During this time\, she also worked as a producer\, writer\, and director of The Black Experience (1968-1973) — a history documentary that aired on prime time in Indianapolis. \nThe exhibit will feature a commissioned text-based piece by artist Carl Pope related to Evans’s book of essays\, Clarity as Concept: A Poet’s Perspective. It will also feature photographs and video from The Black Experience television program provided by Evans. \nThe opening of the exhibition will take place in the presence of Shauta Marsh\, co-founder and director of programs and exhibitions at Tube Factory artspace. \nOpening hours: \nSaturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday – Closed

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 5 at 7pm: Fire Station Cinema \nTuesday\, February 6 at 1pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nIn his lectures at the Fire Station Cinema and at VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium\, award-winning Italian industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti will talk about concepts and drawings\, about his love for modularity and archetypes\, and about the relationship between artisans and inclusive projects to describe a very Italian way of making industrial design. This is a journey made of process images\, prototypes and finished products with specific references to the Masters who inspired his work: Enzo Mari\, Angelo Mangiarotti and the Castiglioni brothers. \nGiulio Iacchetti\, who has worked as an industrial designer since 1992\, has designed for many brands including Abet Laminati\, Alessi\, Artemide\, Ceramiche Refin\, Danese\, Fontana Arte\, Foscarini\, Magis\, Moleskine\, and Pandora design. The distinctive characteristics of his work are the research and definitions of new object typologies\, like the Moscardino\, the biodegradable spoon/fork he designed with Matteo Ragni and for which\, in 2001\, he was awarded Italy’s most prestigious industrial design award\, the Compasso d’Oro. In 2009\, he was awarded the Premio dei Premi prize for innovation by the President of Italy\, for the Coop Eureka project\, which brought the design in the large-scale retail trade. \nIn May 2009 the Triennale di Milano hosted an exhibition of his designs\, titled\, “Giulio Iacchetti. Disobedient objects”. In November 2012 he launched Internoitaliano\, a “factory network” which includes many artisans with whom he designs and produces furniture and accessories that are inspired by the Italian way of living. He has also pursued his personal research projects which look at new design topics such as the symbol of the cross\, and which later led to an exhibition\, titled\, “Cruciale” that took place at the Diocesan Museum\, Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome\, and at Castello di Lombardia in Enna\, Sicily. \nIn January 2015 he curated the “K-ration” exhibition. A K-ration is a military combat food ration. The exhibition\, which reflected on essential and anonymous military design\, took place at the Milano Triennale. In 2014\, he won his second Compasso d’Oro for his designs of manhole covers called “Sfera” (the Italian word for sphere)\, which he designed with Matteo Ragni for Montini.

DESCRIPTION:Projected Reality; In-Transition represents a crossroad between the material and immaterial planes that is revealed through efforts to digitize reality and the displacement that results from one’s removal from its contextual environment. This investigation employs the use of photography\, photogrammetry\, printmaking and the sourcing of physical and digital cartography databases resulting in deficiencies and disorientations. \nEach year the Painting + Printmaking program selects two artists at varying stages of their careers to become artists in residence at VCUarts Qatar.

DESCRIPTION:The show follows the work of LATRA\, which set up the LATRA INNOVATION LAB directly inside refugee camps in Greece. The lab acts as an innovative incubator that brings together an international network of social organizations\, enterprises\, governments\, non-government organizations (NGOs)\, and intra-governmental organizations (IGOs) as well as independent designers\, makers and innovators for the purpose of developing socially impactful solutions directly in the field. The show also displays design outcomes of Core Relief: The 1st International Humanitarian Design Workshop that took place in Lesvos Greece in October 2016. \nREPORTING FROM THE FIELD is curated by Aris Papadopoulos\, founder of LATRA\, an award-winning incubator specializing in socially responsible projects that promote innovation\, technology and entrepreneurship in the humanitarian sector and Maja Kinnemark\, Assistant Professor in Interior Design at VCUarts Qatar. \nA panel discussion\, moderated by Aris Papadopoulos\, will be held at VCUarts Qatar Atrium on January 17 at 6pm. DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 20 at 1pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nTuesday\, November 21 at 7pm: Fire Station Cinema \nMarwa Arsanios (lives and works in Beirut\, Lebanon) received her MFA from University of the Arts London in 2007\, and was a researcher in the Fine Art department at Jan Van Eyck Academie from 2011 to 2012. She has had solo exhibitions at the Beirut Art Center (2017) the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2016)\, Witte de With\, Rotterdam\, the Netherlands (2016)\, Kunsthalle Lissabon\, Lisbon (2015)\, and Art in General\, New York (2015). Her work was also shown at the Thessaloniki Biennial (2015)\, 55th Venice Biennale (2013)\, l the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011)\, Home Works Forum in Beirut (2010\, 2013\, 2015)\, Ludwig museum (2016)\, the New Museum\, New York (2014)\, M HKA\, Antwerp\, Belgium (2013)\, and nGbK\, Berlin (2012). Screenings of her videos have taken place at the Berlinale\, Berlin (2010\, 2015)\, e-flux storefront\, New York (2009)\, and Centre Pompidou\, Paris (2017\, 2011). \nIn 2012 Arsanios was awarded the special prize of the Pinchuk Future Generation Art Prize. She was nominated for the Han Nefkens Foundation award in 2014 and more recently the Paulo Cunha e Silva art prize. Marwa Arsanios is also the co-founder of 98weeks. \nIn her lecture at VCUarts Qatar\, she will talk about the subject of reading\, performing text and language as a way to deal with politics. Thinking through reading as a communal activity rather than something that would be done individually\, in the silence of the public library or the privacy of the domestic space. This talk will also tackle the curated reading room revolving mainly around eco-feminist and finance themes. \nIn her lecture at Fire Station Cinema\, she will talk about how the broad frame of investigation in which her practice operates\, would be the different aspects of the relation between the cultural realm\, politics and violence. And by the cultural realm she means its politics\, economies and social manifestations. She has been looking\, through different material objects\, at the way violence affects culture and the way it gets affected by it and reproduces it.

DESCRIPTION:City Limits presents the works of Sajjad Abbas and Laith K. Daer\, artists and sometime collaborators who have developed their work in Baghdad\, using the physical space and interactions within the city as a living organizer of how\, and why\, they work. \nChoreography\, graffiti\, and documented public installation experiments comprise the exhibition. There are small moments\, filmed inside throwaway cars\, and large questions\, hung boldly on the façcade of buildings. SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Alia Farid
DESCRIPTION:For her lecture at VCUQatar\, Alia Farid will discuss two projects that portray the arrival of\, and fallout with\, modernity in the Arab world. \nThe first\, “Acquiring Modernity” (2014)\, focuses on the establishment of the Kuwait National Museum in Kuwait’s participation at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia.  The second\, “Maarad Trablous” (2016)\, is a film-portrait of the International Fairgrounds in Tripoli (Lebanon) created for the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo. \nCaption: Still from Maarad Trablous\, 2016.
