SUMMARY:Transition in Unknown Territory; Panic Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Leekyung Kang has navigated the structural framework and “bone/skeleton” of infrastructure in urban landscapes since 2014. By exploring spatial surfaces\, such as construction sites and scaffolding structures\, Kang leverages architectural imagery with mixed media. She has recently been seeking to uncover the unseen space\, which is present\, but never fully revealed. \nKang would like to capture this unfinished state and challenge the conventional understanding of space\, which tends to focus on its physical condition\, history\, and transformation. \nOpening hours: Every day from 9am to 6pm. \nSpecial thanks to the W Hotel. SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lectures: Dice Kayek
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 2 at 7pm: Fire Station Cinema \nTuesday\, April 3 at 1pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nCreating contradictory sensations through the usage of opposing ideas\, forms and fabrics has always been Dice Kayek’s modus operandi. Their approach to fashion is shaped by their research of impossible unions\, and to find minimal\, yet meaningful ways to combine the unexpected. “Istanbul Contrast”\, inspired by and dedicated to Sublime Porte’s harmonious contradictions\, is the culmination of this research. In 2013\, Dice Kayek won the Jameel Prize 3\, an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic traditions\, for its Istanbul Contrast exhibition\, which was hosted by the Victoria & Albert Museum. The result of such prestigious praise led to the launch of fully-fledged couture collections including Woven Tales\, Nocturne 54\, Dollhouse and Winter Garden. \nAfter almost two decades since Ayse and Ece Ege founded Dice Kayek\, they felt the urge to go beyond the temporality of fashion and look deeper into their primal source of fascination: Istanbul\, an indefinable city belonging neither to the West nor to the East\, blending the wisdow of traditions and a flair for modernity. Characterized by its magically coexisting contrasts\, they were wondering how they could translate Istanbul’s rich architectural\, cultural and religious diversity into couture. \nDice Kayek was launched in 1992 by sisters Ece and Ayse Ege and over the past two decades has built a reputation for its carefully curated universe\, one in which tradition combines with modernity\, film\, art and personal memories to inform its designs which are inspired by using architectural lines to build strong\, structural silhouettes. A modern take on couture\, creativity\, detail and craftsmanship underpins the Turkish heritage brand\, which is based in Paris and became part of the Federation Francaise de la Couture in 1994. Since then\, the brand has received industry-wide recognition\, becoming the recipient of numerous accolades and awards and the subject of various cultural and fashion exhibitions. \nImage credit: Haghia Sophia dress by Dice Kayek

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Giulio Iacchetti
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 5 at 7pm: Fire Station Cinema \nTuesday\, February 6 at 1pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nIn his lectures at the Fire Station Cinema and at VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium\, award-winning Italian industrial designer Giulio Iacchetti will talk about concepts and drawings\, about his love for modularity and archetypes\, and about the relationship between artisans and inclusive projects to describe a very Italian way of making industrial design. This is a journey made of process images\, prototypes and finished products with specific references to the Masters who inspired his work: Enzo Mari\, Angelo Mangiarotti and the Castiglioni brothers. \nGiulio Iacchetti\, who has worked as an industrial designer since 1992\, has designed for many brands including Abet Laminati\, Alessi\, Artemide\, Ceramiche Refin\, Danese\, Fontana Arte\, Foscarini\, Magis\, Moleskine\, and Pandora design. The distinctive characteristics of his work are the research and definitions of new object typologies\, like the Moscardino\, the biodegradable spoon/fork he designed with Matteo Ragni and for which\, in 2001\, he was awarded Italy’s most prestigious industrial design award\, the Compasso d’Oro. In 2009\, he was awarded the Premio dei Premi prize for innovation by the President of Italy\, for the Coop Eureka project\, which brought the design in the large-scale retail trade. \nIn May 2009 the Triennale di Milano hosted an exhibition of his designs\, titled\, “Giulio Iacchetti. Disobedient objects”. In November 2012 he launched Internoitaliano\, a “factory network” which includes many artisans with whom he designs and produces furniture and accessories that are inspired by the Italian way of living. He has also pursued his personal research projects which look at new design topics such as the symbol of the cross\, and which later led to an exhibition\, titled\, “Cruciale” that took place at the Diocesan Museum\, Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome\, and at Castello di Lombardia in Enna\, Sicily. \nIn January 2015 he curated the “K-ration” exhibition. A K-ration is a military combat food ration. The exhibition\, which reflected on essential and anonymous military design\, took place at the Milano Triennale. In 2014\, he won his second Compasso d’Oro for his designs of manhole covers called “Sfera” (the Italian word for sphere)\, which he designed with Matteo Ragni for Montini.

SUMMARY:Projected Reality; In Transition
DESCRIPTION:Projected Reality; In-Transition represents a crossroad between the material and immaterial planes that is revealed through efforts to digitize reality and the displacement that results from one’s removal from its contextual environment. This investigation employs the use of photography\, photogrammetry\, printmaking and the sourcing of physical and digital cartography databases resulting in deficiencies and disorientations. \nEach year the Painting + Printmaking program selects two artists at varying stages of their careers to become artists in residence at VCUarts Qatar.

She was nominated for the Han Nefkens Foundation award in 2014 and more recently the Paulo Cunha e Silva art prize. Marwa Arsanios is also the co-founder of 98weeks. \nIn her lecture at VCUarts Qatar\, she will talk about the subject of reading\, performing text and language as a way to deal with politics. Thinking through reading as a communal activity rather than something that would be done individually\, in the silence of the public library or the privacy of the domestic space. This talk will also tackle the curated reading room revolving mainly around eco-feminist and finance themes. \nIn her lecture at Fire Station Cinema\, she will talk about how the broad frame of investigation in which her practice operates\, would be the different aspects of the relation between the cultural realm\, politics and violence. And by the cultural realm she means its politics\, economies and social manifestations. She has been looking\, through different material objects\, at the way violence affects culture and the way it gets affected by it and reproduces it.

SUMMARY:City Limits
DESCRIPTION:City Limits presents the works of Sajjad Abbas and Laith K. Daer\, artists and sometime collaborators who have developed their work in Baghdad\, using the physical space and interactions within the city as a living organizer of how\, and why\, they work. \nChoreography\, graffiti\, and documented public installation experiments comprise the exhibition. There are small moments\, filmed inside throwaway cars\, and large questions\, hung boldly on the façcade of buildings. In between pleas of not to shoot\, accusations\, and confessions\, is the sincerity of defiance\, close close-ups and composed shots working not against\, but in urgent\, sustained opposition to silence. \nThe opening of the exhibition will take place in the presence of the artists. \nOpening hours: \nSaturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday – Closed

SUMMARY:form(force)
DESCRIPTION:form(force) is an exhibition of works drawn from VCU’s campuses in Richmond and Doha. Through a wide variety of media\, including painting\, sculpture\, design\, craft\, and installation\, form(force) explores ways in which artists navigate relationships and tensions between embodied and virtual realities. \nThe selection of works evokes a circle of mimicry\, in which organic forms are patterned after technological ones\, and where technological forms emulate lived experiences in the natural world. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm      Friday – Closed \nImage: Matthew Warren\, “u-stitch new”\, ink on backlight film\, fabricated light box\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Dr. Hassan Radoine
DESCRIPTION:The internationalist standardized vocabularies and forms of architecture plague all of the cities in the Middle East\, with no consideration for their environmental\, ecological\, cultural\, geographical or social settings. The rich architectural diversity and uniqueness of the region\, which once offered the world architectural wonders\, has frequently been substituted with monotonous designs. \nArchitecture in the Middle East is trapped between corrective measures of its own tradition\, and imported forms. Therefore\, the complexity and diversity of the region’s cultural and geographical environments require not only smart designs\, but also engrained knowledge in order to conceive comprehensively sustainable projects. \nThis lecture is about exploring architectural frontiers on how these environments to be comprehended\, and about how contemporary design considers their contextual meanings. Dr. Hassan Radoine is an architecture curator\, critic\, educator\, author and consultant. He is currently the Director of the École Nationale d Architecture (Morocco).

SUMMARY:In Progress قيد الإنشاء
DESCRIPTION:With this exhibition the students consider the change that is taking place in various parts of Doha. The most noticeable “visual” of this change is in the construction work that is “In Progress” that we see in and around the neighborhoods where we live. In a city like Doha\, many neighborhoods share similar visuals. \nRather than see the idea of construction being framed as a negative aspect\, the Painting and Printmaking students want to embrace these “change” ideas through the work they are presenting at the exhibition. \nFire Station opening hours: \nSunday to Thursday: 10am – 10pm \nFriday: 2pm – 10pm \nSaturday: 10am – 10pm

SUMMARY:Muhawwil (Transformer)
DESCRIPTION:These murals mark a transformation in religious discourse within Gulf societies: where once only calligraphic depictions of this nature were allowed\, today’s pop-culture and the mass-production of images have forced conservative entities to reconsider this tradition and adopt a mutated technique to convey moral advice in the form of wall paintings. This project reconstructs these paintings into animations\, so as to highlight the dilemma of representation that exists between the ancient and the modern. \nMonira Al Qadiri is part of the artist collective GCC and she will be participating in Tasmeem 2017\, VCUQatar’s biannual art conference. This exhibition is curated by Maysaa Al-Mumin\, VCUQatar Assistant Professor in Art Foundation. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm      Friday – Closed \nSpecial thanks to the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) \nImage courtesy of Monira Al Qadiri\, “Muhawwil (Transformer)\,” Video installation\, 2014

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Mohamed Elshahed
DESCRIPTION:The site in central Cairo where today’s Opera House and Museum of Modern Art are located was once the country’s focal point for exhibiting national modernity. The history of the site captures a pivotal process in Egypt’s modernization: the ways in which Egyptian strategies of self-representation developed over time. In 1898 British colonial authorities held the first agricultural exhibition on the southern part of the uninhabited Gezira Island. \nFollowing the 1919 Revolution\, the site was transformed into a stage for the Egyptian government\, along with financial institutions and powerful industrialists\, to showcase national production in a variety of fields such as agricultural products\, as well as industrial goods such as textiles. Over a period of half a century the exhibition site was altered numerous times with permanent and temporary buildings and exhibition halls. This domestic development was paralleled with Egypt’s presence in international exhibitions such as the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. \nIn Egypt and abroad the architectures of national exhibitions and pavilions\, as well as their circulated images\, were powerful tools for communicating Egypt’s modernity and progress to national and international audiences. In this lecture Mohamed Elshahed examines several examples of Egyptian exhibition architecture between 1926 and 1964\, a period framed by the rise and fall of state-led nationalist representations of Egypt. \nPhoto credit: Cairo University students building an architectural model of the exhibition grounds\, published in the Egyptian French language magazine Images\, December 1949.

SUMMARY:Temporary Surface
DESCRIPTION:Temporary Surface refers to both the ever-changing urban landscape of Qatar and the continual manipulations of surface and mark that characterize the picture plane. \nFor the past year\, Lewis and McPherson have maintained artist studios at VCUQatar\, while also teaching and mentoring students within the Painting and Printmaking Department. The exhibition is the culmination of this nine-month period of research and practice in Qatar. \nBoth artists actively layer visual information as a form of mark-making\, bringing together drawn\, painted and photographic sources. The results range from Lewis’ large-scale photographic prints and assemblages to McPherson’s series of handmade artist books\, paintings and sculpture. \nWhile Lewis’ work is driven by experimental processes referencing science\, architecture and perspective as source material\, McPherson builds narrative and humor using unexpected combinations of figures\, text and imagery drawn from both found and collected experiences. Within each practice\, there is a strong connection between digital and handmade methods. Temporary Surface reveals observations of this particular place and time in Qatar as it reflects each artist’s approach to making and processing visual information. \nThe artists will also give a public lecture on their work at VCUQatar Room 268 on 29 April at 12:30pm.
