SUMMARY:form(force)
DESCRIPTION:form(force) is an exhibition of works drawn from VCU’s campuses in Richmond and Doha. Through a wide variety of media\, including painting\, sculpture\, design\, craft\, and installation\, form(force) explores ways in which artists navigate relationships and tensions between embodied and virtual realities. \nThe selection of works evokes a circle of mimicry\, in which organic forms are patterned after technological ones\, and where technological forms emulate lived experiences in the natural world. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm      Friday – Closed \nImage: Matthew Warren\, “u-stitch new”\, ink on backlight film\, fabricated light box\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Dr. Hassan Radoine
DESCRIPTION:The internationalist standardized vocabularies and forms of architecture plague all of the cities in the Middle East\, with no consideration for their environmental\, ecological\, cultural\, geographical or social settings. The rich architectural diversity and uniqueness of the region\, which once offered the world architectural wonders\, has frequently been substituted with monotonous designs. \nArchitecture in the Middle East is trapped between corrective measures of its own tradition\, and imported forms. Therefore\, the complexity and diversity of the region’s cultural and geographical environments require not only smart designs\, but also engrained knowledge in order to conceive comprehensively sustainable projects. \nThis lecture is about exploring architectural frontiers on how these environments to be comprehended\, and about how contemporary design considers their contextual meanings. Dr. Hassan Radoine is an architecture curator\, critic\, educator\, author and consultant. He is currently the Director of the École Nationale d Architecture (Morocco).

SUMMARY:In Progress قيد الإنشاء
DESCRIPTION:With this exhibition the students consider the change that is taking place in various parts of Doha. The most noticeable “visual” of this change is in the construction work that is “In Progress” that we see in and around the neighborhoods where we live. In a city like Doha\, many neighborhoods share similar visuals. \nRather than see the idea of construction being framed as a negative aspect\, the Painting and Printmaking students want to embrace these “change” ideas through the work they are presenting at the exhibition. \nFire Station opening hours: \nSunday to Thursday: 10am – 10pm \nFriday: 2pm – 10pm \nSaturday: 10am – 10pm

SUMMARY:Muhawwil (Transformer)
DESCRIPTION:These murals mark a transformation in religious discourse within Gulf societies: where once only calligraphic depictions of this nature were allowed\, today’s pop-culture and the mass-production of images have forced conservative entities to reconsider this tradition and adopt a mutated technique to convey moral advice in the form of wall paintings. This project reconstructs these paintings into animations\, so as to highlight the dilemma of representation that exists between the ancient and the modern. \nMonira Al Qadiri is part of the artist collective GCC and she will be participating in Tasmeem 2017\, VCUQatar’s biannual art conference. This exhibition is curated by Maysaa Al-Mumin\, VCUQatar Assistant Professor in Art Foundation. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm      Friday – Closed \nSpecial thanks to the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) \nImage courtesy of Monira Al Qadiri\, “Muhawwil (Transformer)\,” Video installation\, 2014

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Mohamed Elshahed
DESCRIPTION:The site in central Cairo where today’s Opera House and Museum of Modern Art are located was once the country’s focal point for exhibiting national modernity. The history of the site captures a pivotal process in Egypt’s modernization: the ways in which Egyptian strategies of self-representation developed over time. In 1898 British colonial authorities held the first agricultural exhibition on the southern part of the uninhabited Gezira Island. \nFollowing the 1919 Revolution\, the site was transformed into a stage for the Egyptian government\, along with financial institutions and powerful industrialists\, to showcase national production in a variety of fields such as agricultural products\, as well as industrial goods such as textiles. Over a period of half a century the exhibition site was altered numerous times with permanent and temporary buildings and exhibition halls. This domestic development was paralleled with Egypt’s presence in international exhibitions such as the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs. \nIn Egypt and abroad the architectures of national exhibitions and pavilions\, as well as their circulated images\, were powerful tools for communicating Egypt’s modernity and progress to national and international audiences. In this lecture Mohamed Elshahed examines several examples of Egyptian exhibition architecture between 1926 and 1964\, a period framed by the rise and fall of state-led nationalist representations of Egypt. \nPhoto credit: Cairo University students building an architectural model of the exhibition grounds\, published in the Egyptian French language magazine Images\, December 1949.

SUMMARY:Temporary Surface
DESCRIPTION:Temporary Surface refers to both the ever-changing urban landscape of Qatar and the continual manipulations of surface and mark that characterize the picture plane. \nFor the past year\, Lewis and McPherson have maintained artist studios at VCUQatar\, while also teaching and mentoring students within the Painting and Printmaking Department. The exhibition is the culmination of this nine-month period of research and practice in Qatar. \nBoth artists actively layer visual information as a form of mark-making\, bringing together drawn\, painted and photographic sources. The results range from Lewis’ large-scale photographic prints and assemblages to McPherson’s series of handmade artist books\, paintings and sculpture. \nWhile Lewis’ work is driven by experimental processes referencing science\, architecture and perspective as source material\, McPherson builds narrative and humor using unexpected combinations of figures\, text and imagery drawn from both found and collected experiences. Within each practice\, there is a strong connection between digital and handmade methods. Temporary Surface reveals observations of this particular place and time in Qatar as it reflects each artist’s approach to making and processing visual information. \nThe artists will also give a public lecture on their work at VCUQatar Room 268 on 29 April at 12:30pm.

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture: Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi
DESCRIPTION:UAE-based writer and art collector Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi discussed the political undertones of iconic artworks of the 20th century in the Arab world for the first Crossing Boundaries Lecture of the 2016-2017 year. \nFrom the Baathist regimes of Syria and Iraq to Egypt’s pan-Arabism under Gamal Abdel Nasser\, paintings and sculptures in addition to film and performance have been employed by various governments as a tool of soft power to propagate their policies to the public not only in their respective states but throughout the region and beyond. Despite this government patronage of the arts\, many artists have chosen to challenge their authorities through their art practices. This talk is an attempt to shed light on an often neglected dimension in the modern history of the Arab world. \nImage credit: Mona Hatoum\, Infinity (1991-2001)\, Barjeel Art Foundation\, Sharjah.

SUMMARY:ISSUE ISME
DESCRIPTION:Through a menagerie of imagery and iconography\, the artists reflect a mirror-like vision of some darker truths\, or mis-truths\, that exist within us all.The exhibition will feature a series of works by each artist in several mediums\, combining fine art\, stencil\, and traditional batik techniques. In addition\, two wall-sized graffiti murals will be created collaboratively; one during their weeklong stay at VCUQatar\, and a second “live” mural during the opening of the event. \nThis exhibit is curated by Melanie McClintock\, who previously collaborated with the artists on a two-year project\, Indoartamiks\, in Bayat\, Indonesia\, to inspire innovation in traditional crafts through graffiti. \nOpening hours: \nSaturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm \nFriday – Closed

SUMMARY:Art and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:VCUQatar and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar are proud to present an exhibition by students working at the intersection of art and medicine. The students spent a semester in a ‘learning laboratory’ which sought to conduct research on the disparate but connected practices of art and medicine through a series of interdisciplinary collaborations. The research project allowed the students to take part in innovative\, interdisciplinary pedagogies that explore methods\, materials and tools that transcend their respective disciplines. \nThe work will be on display from April 12 to May 14.

DESCRIPTION:With the generous support of the Qatar Foundation\, The Painting and Printmaking Department is proud to showcase the VCUQatar Fellowship and the work of this year fellow Gina Hunt. Each year the program selects two artists at varying stages of their careers to become artists in residence at VCUQatar. \nGina Hunt makes abstract paintings as an interdisciplinary platform to research the complexities and subjectivity of vision.  Her solo exhibition Liquid Crystal + Polymer features a body of work that involves screens as a conceptual platform for investigation. While in residence at VCUQatar\, Hunt has been researching screens of different scales\, from the barely perceptible grid of the digital screen\, to the small\, tessellated grid of the warp and weft of textiles\, to the architectural patterns of window screens\, which our bodies inhabit and physically encounter. \nThe exhibition will feature a new body of work initiated and completed while in residence at VCUQatar\, including large-scale paintings and installation. \nwww.gina-hunt.com

SUMMARY:Rethinking Design: A luxury metadesign brand
DESCRIPTION:Milan-based fashion designer Kristina Spirk considers that behind every great design\, there is an even greater story. \nAs designers we are trained and given special skills to invent and create new products to increase consumption. But in the 21st century do we really need new products? Should we continue to function as designers of the past or should we find a way to reinvent the process of design? \nSpecializing in luxury womenswear\, Kristina Spirk combines her vision with metadesign principles to spearhead her second fashion label\, Decontoured.

SUMMARY:Nastassja E. Swift
DESCRIPTION:With the generous support of the Qatar Foundation\, The Painting and Printmaking Department is proud to showcase the VCUQatar Fellowship and the work of this year fellow Nastassja E. Swift. Each year the program selects two artists at varying stages of their careers to become artists in residence at VCUQatar. \nAlluding to feelings of doubt and anxiety\, I Keep Repeating it Over and Over in My Head features work that illustrates both the reaction to experiencing racism and\, subsequently\, the desire to construct the right identity in order to achieve acceptance. Consisting of needle-felted faces and woven hair\, the exhibition combines conventional and unconventional uses of fiber processes and materials. Nastassja fuses memories from her childhood with fictional responses that depict provocative self-portraits and narratives. \nThis group of work is an accumulation of the conceptual development and research during her residency in Qatar.

SUMMARY:Domestic Affairs
DESCRIPTION:Domestic Affairs is a travelling exhibition which explores the house as an interface to our social\, economic and political lives. Our home is not just the place where we live; it is a place where we encounter friends and strangers\, where we exchange goods and services\, where we engage or influence political systems\, and where we participate in the global community. \nThe house is a home to a paradox. It houses the simultaneous desire to share private matters in the public realm and to seek privacy in public. While we install wifi-blocking technology\, we invite unknown guests to rent one of our rooms for a night or two. \nInitiated by Bureau Europa and curated by Giovanni Innella and Agata Jaworska\, this third edition of Domestic Affairs is in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQatar) and the Doha Fire Station – Artist in Residence. \n__________________________ \nFire Station Opening Hours: \nSaturday – Thursday from 10:00am to 8:00pm \nFriday from 2:00pm to 8:00pm

SUMMARY:Luc Tuymans
DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Luc Tuymans is often referred to as one of Europe’s most influential painters. He is a leader amongst a new generation of figurative painters\, widely credited with having contributed to the revival of the painting in the 1990s. His use of photographic source material is a basis for his signature figurative paintings\, which transform mediated film\, television\, and print sources into examinations of history and memory. \nTuymans takes his subjects from major historical events and everyday objects\, though his approach to all images is analytical. His work has been presented as the focus of several retrospectives\, including at the Tate Modern\, 2004\, the Wexner Center for the Arts\, 2009\, and BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels in 2011 and Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga\, Spain (2011). \nThe lecture coincides with an exhibition of his works at Qatar Museums Gallery ALRIWAQ through 30 January 2016.

SUMMARY:We’re In The Same Room
DESCRIPTION:Artists: Habeeb Mohammed Abu-Futtaim\, Corinna Seto\, Ayaz Abdur Rauf\, Fatima Mohammed\, Fatima Elzahraa and Nagiya Moideen. \nAs senior students from the Painting and Printmaking department at VCUQ prepare to graduate\, they learn and explore the different ways in which they can present their work as a part of their broad and versatile curriculum. This show is the outcome of an all-student effort in realizing and putting together the students’ personal investigations thus far. \nThe six senior students represent an expansive array of works within a holistic discipline. In these explorations the students have been invested in over the last three years\, a rather diverse spectrum of ideas have been developed. Distinctive languages and methodologies have been explored and accomplished. Within these inquiries we find the use of color as an abstract language\, vivid visualizations of memories\, collection of data as a means of exerting presence\, attempts of institutional critique on beliefs\, identity and nations through examination of historical narratives. \nVCUQatar and Katara Art Center share a vision for an artistic community in Qatar that embraces\, supports and champions the work of emerging young artists. Through numerous previous collaborations between VCUQatar and Katara Art Center students and faculty have been enriched and their work brought to new audiences through exhibitions\, book launches\, film screenings\, internships and workshops. \nwww.kataraartcenter.com
