SUMMARY:VCUarts Qatar at London Design Biennale 2025
DESCRIPTION:Matter Diplopia is VCUQatar’s first exhibition with the London Design Biennale. It is a collaborative effort of faculty\, students\, and alumni\, representing diverse perspectives and disciplines. It features an array of experimental and exploratory projects that integrate traditional modes of making with emergent technology. Framed by the duality of the built environment and heritage\, the installations are rooted in cultural legacy and material innovation. \nCentral to Matter Diplopia are the themes of fluidity\, transference\, and material agency. The works embody the continuous exchange between local and global influences. They demonstrate how materials can go beyond their origins and offer unique or alternative perspectives that address issues that are at once complex and universal. \nMatter Diplopia invites you to view the work through multiple lenses – material innovation\, culture\, built environment\, history\, technology and the environment. By doing so\, it accommodates diverse interpretations and spurs important conversations. \nThe visitor is invited to explore and interact with the exhibition’s nine works and then go deeper into the artists’ perspectives and processes through the embedded experiential Research Hub where film\, images\, words and sound tell the rest of the story. \nSee more information on our presence at this year’s London Design Biennale here.

SUMMARY:Art Collections and AI: The Impact of Automation on Art History
DESCRIPTION:How does AI impact the study of large image collections? Given the rapid growth of generative AI\, Wasielewski examines the effect of visual AI models like DALL-E or Stable Diffusion on the cultural heritage sphere and what they mean for art historical concepts like style. The talk explores some of the practical and theoretical issues inherent in applying AI techniques in the study and curation of art\, looking at the topic through the lens of art historiography. How are biases in Western art compounded through automation? Do the advantages of automating with AI outweigh the potential for bias\, or do they represent a step backward from the postcolonial critiques of the 20th century? \n  \nSpeaker Bio\nAmanda Wasielewski is Associate Senior Lecturer of Digital Humanities and Associate Professor of Art History in the Department of ALM (Archives\, Libraries\, Museums) at Uppsala University in Sweden. Her research focuses on the use of artificial intelligence tools to study and create art and images. Wasielewski is the author of several monographs including Computational Formalism: Art History and Machine Learning (2023) by MIT Press. Her new book\, Digital Photography After AI\, will be published in 2026.

The film highlights the beauty of the Qatari landscape\, the desert and the sea\, as well as the diversity of the voices that make up the region.\nSebastien Labrunie: French multidisciplinary visual artist specializing in crafting immersive installation art\, 360 fulldome films\, music videos\, experimental VR experiences\, and live A/V performances. «Brèche» is a dive through matter\, light and memories. An organic unfolding of visual noises. Photogrammetric real life scans of different scales merge into abstract landscapes as we dive deeper into worlds where macro and micro become indistinguishable and where past moments interconnect.\nSergey Prokofyev: Ukrainian architect and filmmaker currently based in Berlin. His work bridges urban design and immersive cinema\, striving to create collective experiences that inspire\, engage\, and challenge conventional perceptions. “Labyrinth” represents an attempt to combine the architectural fantasy of a labyrinth and the visual experience of walking through time.\nJosh Rodenberg & Erika Tsuchiya\, Innovative Media Studios\, VCUarts Qatar: “Mirroring the Sky” explores the meditative aspects of light reflection and refraction as discovered in the natural terrains of Qatar. Building a narrative through sound design\, creating a mixture of ambient frequencies and field recordings with rhythmic experimentation.\nSumito Sakakibara: Japanese artist from Hokkaido\, currently based in Nagano Prefecture. “Solitarium”– sanctuary or a sanitarium? A cathedral canopy or a cave painting? Maybe a womb\, perhaps a forest in the eye. One’s inner landscape and vision projected in a skull.\nDiana VanderMeulen & Stefana Fratila: “I want to leave this Earth behind“ is a multisensory project by Canadian artists Stefana Fratila and Diana Lynn VanderMeulen which centers on outer space exploration\, speculative-fictive realities\, and Crip futurity. Engaging audiences in an immersive exercise of imagining interplanetary and sci-fantastical atmospheres– conditions that are inherently unlivable\, unbreathable\, converting all human body-minds into disabled-bodied-ness.\nOlga Wroniewicz: The final echoes of a dying star – light collapsing\, time stretching\, space unraveling. “The Last Words of a Quasar” is a journey through the birth and death of celestial giants\, where sound and vision fuse into an expanding cosmos. Rhythms of breath and heartbeat resonate like cosmic waves\, shaping a luminous\, ephemeral universe before it fades into the void. Produced at the PJAIT Warsaw\, based on a poem by Iva Damjanovski. SUMMARY:Mapping Migration Memories Exhibition at Company House
DESCRIPTION:“Mapping Migration Memories”\, an exhibition by (IN)>Tangible Lab\, will open to the public at Company House in Msheireb Downtown Doha on Wednesday\, November 22. \n“Mapping Migration Memories” is the result of a multi-year research project developed by (IN)>Tangible Lab\, which is part of our Institute for Creative Research. \nGathering and using existing archived and recorded memories\, photos\, films and oral histories\, the exhibition captures the historical biannual nomadic movements between the desert and the sea in Qatar. \nEmbarking on two expeditions to the desert\, the artwork re-enacts migrations in the North and South\, and documents their real locations and soundscapes. \n“Mapping Migration Memories” emphasizes the importance of intangible practices and oral traditions so often lost in rapidly developing societies\, and acts as a testament to the passing down of generational knowledge and human perseverance. \nCompany House\, which is hosting the exhibition\, encapsulates several of the themes explored in “Mapping Migration Memories”. It serves as a dedicated space for preserving the oral histories of Qatari pioneers while spotlighting the enduring significance of indigenous knowledge in shaping the development of modern Qatar. \n“Mapping Migration Memories” is free and open to the public. No registration is required.\nIt will run from November 22 to January 27. \n(IN)>Tangible Lab’s aim is to capture and physically translate the vibrantly diverse intangible cultural heritage within Qatar through interdisciplinary lenses. The research and design cluster brings together designers\, artists\, cultural scholars\, scientists\, and museum curators from VCU Richmond\, partner institutions within Education City as well as relevant external collaborators and researchers.

SUMMARY:Searching For Light – A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Peter Sanders is one of the pre-eminent photographers of the Muslim world. For more than 55 years\, he has built a vast archive reflecting a rich traditional civilization filled with warmth\, humanity and compassion. \nHe began his career in the mid 1960s as one of London’s leading rock and roll photographers\, and his images of Jimi Hendrix\, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones\, among others\, are today considered classics of the period. This was a springboard which led him to his early travels throughout India and then to Morocco documenting their various faiths. In 1971 he photographed the Hajj after obtaining a unique permission for a westerner at that time. \nPeter’s physical journey ran in parallel with his own spiritual exploration. These journeys led him to document deeply\, the Islamic world of peoples\, architecture and geography and culture. \nThis presentation is a retrospective of Peter’s journey which reflects his search for understanding and meaning.
