SUMMARY:this Sand is made of Stars/this Sea is made of Pearls - Horizon Historiographies
DESCRIPTION:this Sand is made of Stars/this Sea is made of Pearls – Horizon Historiographies  \nThis exhibition presents the work of 39 VCUarts Qatar alumni\, with contributions from three Art History graduates\, all of whom now enjoy success in their respective fields. Currently spread over the globe\, it reunites them as they celebrate 25 years of the University’s creative existence in Qatar. \nThe poetic title of the exhibition is inspired by these alumni\, their projects and the country in which they studied – Qatar.  \nTheir works are presented as a curated series of narratives or historiographies and are reminiscent of the local fables of Al Khor\, tales that were once narrated when people gathered around a fire\, keeping memory and faith alive. \nBased on the common themes that are found within each work\, the exhibition develops across four chapters:\nThe Sacred\nThe Water (Sea)\,\nThe Land (Sand)\nThe Self & The Other \nThe exhibition is curated by award-winning curator Hesperia Iliadou Suppiej\, Ph.D. Suppiej Iliadou lives and works in Venice\, Italy\, teaching the MA Curatorial Practice program at the European Institute of Design in Florence. She specializes in museum and curatorial studies. A museum consultant\, she is a member of the International Council of Museums and the only woman elected to the Europa Nostra Industrial and Engineering Heritage Committee\, thus far.

SUMMARY:Project Spaces 2022 - 2023
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition program highlight the creative diversity of our community\, as well as the eclectic range of materials and approaches involved in the individual art and design disciplines. It also provides them with opportunities to present the results of their current artistic explorations\, and is intended to inspire and stimulate the creative activity of the University at large. \nA unique opportunity to display their works at key locations in the building! \nSpeculative History→Design\nOrganized by Patricia Brown and Hawa Stwodah\nFaculty\, VCUarts department of Fashion Design + Merchandising \n \nSpeculative History→Design is an exhibition from the VCUarts Richmond department of Fashion Design + Merchandising. It is on view from August 28 to September 22\, 2022. This project incorporates the work of six junior-level fashion design students\, gleaned from three studio classes and based on one overarching design prompt. The project invited critics from Los Angeles-based Novawear’s Global Citizens\, a design think tank\, platform\, and brand for progressive change via design and social activism that champions inclusivity and diversity. The critics gave insight and suggestions on the brief\, design development\, and final presentation. \nThe students studied Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby’s speculative design theories and were challenged to imagine a specific time or event in history as though it happened differently or not at all\, and how that alternate history would impact everything\, including material culture. Students designed garments within their chosen concepts using an approach that reconsidered the traditionally binary gender constructs of male and female. \nClasses involved in this project included Junior Design Theory and Illustration II\, Cut and Sew Knits Design\, and Menswear Design. Each student crafted a unique sartorial solution to the design problem through research\, experimentation\, hand and computer drawings\, patterning\, and the construction of three-dimensional garments. Through intentional design and storytelling\, the students rendered speculative realities visible. Each garment represents a hopeful history or reconsideration of actuality: thriving peoples who were never colonized\, a place where paganism dominated the spiritual landscape\, and apparel that centers the medical needs of the individual\, to name a few. Bringing materiality to “what if” considerations\, this exercise in narrative garment-making points to the power of speculative design while demonstrating the interwoven nature of clothing and history. \nParticipating Artists:\nSarah Dickens\nMiguel George\nAriana Monterrosa\nDiamond Wilson\nVictoria Woodward\nClaire Woolfall \nLocation: Saffron Hall\, VCUarts Qatar \n__________________________________________________________________________________ \nGenesis\nBy the VCUarts Qatar FabLab team \n \nGenesis is an exhibition by the VCUarts Qatar FabLab team that showcases the potential and advanced skills of the team and facilities. \nAll the pieces exhibited in Genesis shine a light on how making can influence the design process during all the stages of development\, rather than focusing solely on the final outcome. \nAdditive and subtractive fabrication methods\, including the CNC\, laser cutters\, 3D printers\, and inkjets printers\, were used\, displaying the endless possibilities of utilizing VCUarts Qatar’s FabLab facilities. \nParticipants:\nDana El Ladki\nHagar Allam\nHala Amer\nSaga ElKabbash \nLocation: Glass Display on the Ground Floor\, VCUarts Qatar \n__________________________________________________________________________________ \nRelocation: the Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Home\nBy Charlotte Rodenberg \n \n“This work is a direct response to my relocation to Qatar from the United States. Upon moving here\, I began to question my inherent idea of what home looks like. I became interested in the blocky\, geometric villas (houses) in my compound (neighborhood). While I experienced feelings of dislocation\, I found peace in the golden sunsets and cool shadows cast upon the landscape at sunrise and sunset. My sketchbook practice became a way of observing and reflecting on these new surroundings\, recording the way light reflected upon the villas. These drawings became the foundation for this series of screenprints. \n“The meditative act of printmaking\, in this experimental style\, allowed me to reflect on the imagery and build each composition organically. Each print is a monotype (unique print) using a set of silkscreen matrices\, allowing me to further explore color\, line\, form and composition. The act of deconstructing and reconstructing the home image became a metaphorical and literal act of assimilation. \n“As an artist\, my practice has always provided me with a sense of identity. Previously\, while living in Virginia\, my work was a reflection of national and local politics. After arriving in Qatar\, it was important for me to begin a new body of work which documented my life as an expat in order to adapt and find purpose here. Through this process of drawing\, printing\, deconstruction and reconstruction\, I processed my location and changing ideological understanding of home. \n“This reflection on home created a therapeutic foundation to stand\, allowed me to establish myself as a local artist and find necessary purpose. The studios at VCUarts Qatar provided me with the essential time\, space and community to make myself feel at home. My practice has allowed me to process emotions\, adapt and assimilate to expat life.” \nLocation: Library Project Space\, VCUarts Qatar

SUMMARY:What is Home to You?
DESCRIPTION:An architect by profession\, Hafez’s artwork was triggered by his inability to return to Syria during his architecture training in the US because of visa issues. Homesick\, he began making models of his beloved homeland to provide an outlet for his emotions. \nThe upcoming exhibition reflects the political turmoil in the Middle East through the compilation of found objects\, paint and scrap metal. Hafez creates photorealistic\, three-dimensional scenes that architecturally represent the urban fabric of the Middle East and serve as backdrops for political and social expression; promoting a global awareness about the ongoing Syrian conflict. \nHafez’s artwork has recently been featured in several highly acclaimed exhibitions and profiled on National Public Radio\, The New York Times\, The Guardian\, and The New Yorker. \nVisitors can schedule tours during the University’s working hours by clicking on this link https://www.eventbrite.com/e/what-is-home-to-you-a-solo-exhibition-by-mohamad-hafez-project-spaces-tickets-244303086107 \nFind out more about this exhibition at this link https://gallery.qatar.vcu.edu/what-is-home-to-you/

SUMMARY:Wear The Right Thing
DESCRIPTION:Does wearing a tracksuit nowadays define one’s origins and generation or give others an idea of how one envisions the world? From Mark Zuckerberg wearing a hoodie in 2012 for a meeting with Facebook investors\, through Run DMC removing their Adidas shoelaces in solidarity with prison inmates\, to French rappers wearing low cost brands – streetwear these days seems to have regained its political and social edge\, overcoming its bling era. It has emerged as a more hybrid movement\, embracing the post-gender revolution with its unisex metamorphosis\, completely embedded in the universal youth culture\, and the struggles of our times. \nThe “Wear the Right Thing” exhibition translates this notion into contemporary art through the lens of three artists from different generations\, Jamel Shabazz\, Mohamed Bourouissa and Sara Sadik\, all of whom show\, preserve and document the culture and style of diverse communities.  As part of this exhibition\, the designs from Balenciaga and pieces from private collectors materialize and add to the spirit of freedom and irreverence of streetwear. \nJulie Boukobza is a curator and art critic based in Paris and Arles\, in charge of the LUMA Arles Residency Program. Ali Khan is Associate Professor at the Fashion Design Department at VCUarts Qatar. \nSeptember 15 to October 23\, 2021\nFree and open to the public\nThe Gallery at VCUarts Qatar\nhttps://gallery.qatar.vcu.edu  \nMain image – Caption:\nJamel Shabazz\nRadio Man\nChromogenic print\n35.6 x 27.9 cm\nBrooklyn\, NYC 1980\nCourtesy of the artist and Galerie Bene Taschen

SUMMARY:Wavelength Lecture by Mohamed Bourouissa
DESCRIPTION:The Wavelength lecture series will continue on Tuesday\, April 27 at 7pm Doha time with a lecture by Mohamed Bourouissa. \nBourouissa implicitly describes contemporary society by its contours. With a critical take on the mass media image\, the subjects of his photographs and videos are people left behind at the crossroads of integration and exclusion. Preceded by a long immersion phase\, each of Bourouissa’s projects builds a new enunciation situation. Unlike false simplistic media constructions\, the artist reintroduces complexity into the representation of the margins of hypervisibility. \nHis work has been exhibited in numerous solo exhibitions\, at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris\, the Centre Pompidou de Paris\, the Barnes Foundation\, Philadelphia\, the Stedelijk Museum\, Amsterdam\, the base in Frankfurt am Main\, the Ball\, Paris\, the Haus der Kunst\, Munich and the FRAC Franche-Comté in Besançon. He has participated in the Sharjah\, Havana\, Lyon\, Venice\, Algiers\, Liverpool and Berlin Biennales and the Milan Triennial. \nIn 2018\, he was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize. In 2017\, he was selected for the Prix Pictet photography prize. His works belong to leading collections\, including that of the LACMA in Los Angeles\, the Centre Pompidou\, the Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris\, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. \nRegister now at https://icavcu.org/events/wavelength-mohamed-bourouissa/

SUMMARY:Wavelength Lecture by Tarek Atoui
DESCRIPTION:Composer and artist Tarek Atoui will be giving the latest talk in the Wavelength lecture series. \nIt will take place on March 30 at 7pm Doha time. \nOcula magazine recently described the Paris-based sound artist and composer’s oeuvre as sitting “at the cusp of redefining the language of visual and performing arts and challenging contemporary sound production.” \nAtoui comprehensively exploits the potential of sound art\, which lies at the heart of his practice. He is not only interested in how audio events or sounds develop an acoustic effect. Equally important to him is how these phenomena can be perceived with sensory organs other than the ear\, how they act as a catalyst for human interaction\, and how they relate to social\, historical\, or spatial parameters. The point of departure for his works is usually extensive anthropological\, ethnological\, musicological\, or technical research\, which results in the realization of instruments\, listening rooms\, performances\, or workshops. \nAtoui has presented his work internationally at the Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates (2009 and 2013); dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel\, Germany (2012); the 8th Berlin Biennial (2014); Tate Modern\, London (2016); CCA NTU\, Singapore (2017); Garage Moscow (2018); the 58th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia (2019)\, the Okayama Art Summit 2019\, The Fridericianum (2020).  He was appointed co-artistic director of STEIM studios in 2007\, and of the Bergen Assembly\, a triennial for contemporary art in Norway in 2016. \nRegister now at https://icavcu.org/events/wavelength-tarek-atoui/ \nWavelength is an online lecture series that is a collaboration between VCUarts\, the ICA\, and VCUarts Qatar. A dynamic group of artists\, designers\, curators and scholars have been invited to share their work with the VCU communities in Richmond and Doha as well as the general public throughout the 2020–21 academic year.

SUMMARY:Wavelength Lecture by Akram Zaatari
DESCRIPTION:Zaatari’s work is tied to the practice of collecting. He is deeply invested in researching photographic practices in the Middle East\, examining how photography served to shape notions of aesthetics\, postures and social codes. He is interested in looking at the present through a wealth of past photographic records. \nZaatari has been focusing since 1999 on the archive of Studio Shehrazade in Saida\, Lebanon\, studying\, indexing\, and presenting the work of photographer Hashem el Madani (1928–2017) as a register of social relationships and of photographic practices. \nZaatari’s work reflects on the shifting nature of borders and the production and circulation of images in the context of the current political divisions in the Middle East. His videos and photographic installations look into technologies of image production and communication and the notions of surveillance\, exploring the way different media apparatuses get employed in the service of power\, resistance\, and memory. \nThis lecture will be moderated by Noah Simblist\, Chair and Associate Professor\, from VCUarts in Richmond. \nPhotograph by Marco Milan. \nRegister now at https://icavcu.org/events/wavelength-akram-zaatari/

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture by Asta Roseway
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, Oct. 20 at 7:30pm\nFree and open to all. \nResearch often begins with the same question “What if?” \nAsta Roseway takes you on a journey as she explores her role as a Fusionist who has created projects such as talking plants\, interactive tattoos\, living architecture\, and ecological sensing. Each of these experimentations are collaborative models designed to generate a vision of a more positive and inclusive future. \nIn her talk\, she also discusses her latest challenges\, attempting to merge researchers\, engineers\, chemists\, and government policymakers together to try to study and solve some of the problems we all face with urban air pollution and climate change in general. \nBecause like her\, each one of us is called to actively engage to shape our collective future. \nTo register\, please go to this link: https://vcu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_v7JvQJcZT4qlzrS4pIe4TA \nAsta Roseway works as a Principal Research Designer in the Urban Innovation Initiative at Microsoft Research but refers to herself as a ‘Fusionist’\, or someone who works between disciplines and fields\, using design. Her focus lies primarily towards building the next wave of emerging solutions towards the Environment\, Emotional Health\, Social Consciousness\, and Sustainability. \nHer research often begins with the same question “What if?” which often leads to unconventional outcomes such as smart tattoos\, talking plants\, living architecture\, wearable light therapy\, and air quality experiences. \nShe is also a strong advocate for a diverse and inclusive culture and helped to establish Microsoft’s first ever Artist in Residence program that enables Artists to work with Computer Scientists. Some of these collaborations have been showcased at venues such as Ars Electronica\, SXSW\, CES\, and Biofabricate in New York City. \nShe also co-founded Digigirlz\, one of Microsoft’s longest running diversity programs that aims to educate and inspire high school girls about the Tech Industry. She is a Parsons School of Design alumni. \nPhotograph courtesy of Microsoft.

SUMMARY:Project Spaces
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition program highlight the creative diversity of our community\, as well as the eclectic range of materials and approaches involved in the individual art and design disciplines. It also provides them with opportunities to present the results of their current artistic explorations\, and is intended to inspire and stimulate the creative activity of the University at large. \nA unique opportunity to display their works at key locations in the building!\n2020-2021 \nFASH 402 – Accessory Design\nBy the Fashion Design Senior Students\, Class of 2021 \nIntroduced in 2019\, the Accessory Design course at the Fashion Design program at VCUarts Qatar aims to prepare students for real-world industry practices in the field of handbag design; from market analysis\, conceptualization\, first sketch to final commercial prototype.Through the design process\, students experiment with 2D manual and digital research techniques seeking to balance new ideas with commercial reality. The course shifts to 3D exploration\, where students build their first mockup with paper in order to understand proportions\, structure and construction techniques. How does the bag fit on a body? Is it ergonomic? How is it carried? Is it functional? How does it open and close? The selected final sketches and mockups are sent to Italy for production. With the support of VCUarts Qatar\, the Eco Lux Lab initiative and Rino Magnani – an Italian handbag master artisan – these designs have become a reality. Magnani assisted the students online with their design and 3D processes\, sharing his invaluable experience and techniques. The short video on display at the exhibition has been captured during a workshop where Magnani was presenting\, step by step\, the manufacturing process. The exhibited handbags are the first prototypes. Each handbag has been produced in three different colors to reflect commercial colorways. The pictures displayed in the glass gallery are the final handbags. These pieces will be on sale at the luxury accessory corner of the Fifty One East department store by the end of April 2021.The Accessory Design Class of 2021 would like to thank VCUarts Qatar\, the Eco Lux Lab\, and Christopher Fink for their support.A huge virtual applause to Rino Magnani and Anastasia Farnetti Merenda for their patience\, passion\, talent and sharing their immense knowledge with us.Participants:Students:Dana AhmedSafa al HadithiMedhawi AlobaidliRyan BasilioSidra SohailFaculty:Federica VisaniLocation: Glass display on the ground floor at VCUarts Qatar.________Parametric PaintingsBy Ahmed Nour \n \nPortraying a dragonfly in various stages of abstraction\, conveyed in digital paintings. The level of abstraction is determined by using Grasshopper to specify different parametric settings for each painting. \nLocation: First-floor glass case display at VCUarts Qatar.\n________ \nIDES 491 – Digital Formations\nBy Students: Asma Almohannadi\, Aldana Al-Meghisib\, Binsha Basheer\, Maha Masri\, Mariam Kraidli\, Maryam Al-Kuwari\, Osama Arabi Katbi\, Shaika Al-Meghaisib\, Shainah Dane Juras\, Yara Barakat.  \nBy Faculty: Mohammad Nabil Suleiman and Chris Buchakjian. \n \nDates: Feb 21 – Mar 11\, 2021 \n“Digital Formations” aims to research and experiment with different computational processes and workflows in arts and design. This exploration is situated in post-problem solving – seeking new forms\, tools\, and workflows where the output is not prescribed\, all the while attempting to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. The class (IDES 491: Topics in Interior Design) is not defined as a linear design process with objective outcomes\, but rather as the iterative\, non-linear\, and speculative process with the ability to reassess and shift our disciplinary discourse. \nIn this first module students explore tools and processes of making patterns with points and lines. These parametric forms start as data and flow from 2D to 3D; from the screen into the physical world . Exhibited are artifacts from a collection of the different processes and accumulations of what might be considered a turning point in the practice of the designer. From extensive classes in Arabic calligraphy to various experiments in handmade art\, the designer spent months understanding the correlations between well-being\, culture and design work. Although the objective of the branding was meant to be an outcome with neutral and limited expression\, an array of traces of the artist can be seen within the work. \nMay we always dare to show human entanglement in all of our work. We are torn\, bent and beautifully made for all to feel. \nProject led by: Zainab AlShibani\, Student\, Graphic Design department\, VCUarts Qatar \nDates: From Aug. 26 to Sept. 3\, 2019 \nLocation: Project Spaces – Library

SUMMARY:Writing Together
DESCRIPTION:The VCUarts Qatar Libraries and Research Office invite you to participate in Writing Together\, a 12-week online writing accountability group – a supportive online ‘place’ where you can set goals\, share writing tips\, discuss pitfalls\, and build momentum with your writing.  Come together with diverse academics from across Education City who\, like you\, are trying to get their writing done and their voices heard! \nThis initiative is for academics\, researchers\, scholars\, faculty\, and alumni who are looking to join an online writing group. Participants will be working independently to move forward on their individual writing projects. \nDuration: May 31 – August 16 (12 weeks) \nDate/Time: Sundays and Tuesdays from 10:00am until 1:00pm \nJoin as many sessions as you’d like\, or start slow with just one per week. \nThis group is for you\, if… \n\nyou crave uninterrupted time to read\, write\, and think.\nyou want to be held accountable\, and revive or refresh neglected projects.\nyou want to be ‘with’ others who face similar challenges\, yet want to feel good about writing instead of feeling stressed out.\nyou are tired of writing in isolation and looking for inspiration.\nyou are an educator and/or faculty member looking to move a writing project forward\, or a rising scholar working toward an advanced degree or Ph.D.\n\nHow Will I Benefit? \n\nEnjoy structure in a time when routine has been lost.\nMeet diverse academics from across Education City who\, like you\, are trying to get their writing done and their voices heard.\nEnjoy much needed positive social support and wrap up a writing project by the end of August.\n\nHow Does It Work? \nIt’s simple. \n\nAt the start of each online session\, group members ‘check-in’ to share measurable writing goals for that session.\nThen\, writers can either ‘leave’ the session or stay ‘online’ and write.\nDuring the second or ‘check-out’ session\, members confirm if they moved forward or met their goal\, what went to plan\, and what they hope to improve for the following session.\n\nThe idea is to build momentum through consistent practice. It is powerful\, and proven to work. \nThis program is fully subscribed.

DESCRIPTION:We often see color as having one face.  Should we look deeper\, separating the layers through solution or suspension\, we can see that each color is composed of a family of colors\, changing with exposure to environments\, materials and light. \nThrough an interactive collection of artist works and workshops\, Color Lab explores the shifting face of color\, inviting the observer to participate in a series of chromatographic journeys through chromatography\, cyanotypes\, photograms\, and pigments of provenance\, sourced and apportioned to denote a sense of place.  During the opening of the event\, visitors will have an opportunity to participate through color experiments resulting in a final collaborative work with unique take-aways. \nRegular opening hours: \nSaturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday and National holidays – Closed \nMore information about the artists: \nLiz Nielsen is a Brooklyn based artist whose works have been exhibited in New York\, Chicago\, Paris\, London\, Budapest\, Amsterdam and Berlin.
