SUMMARY:Wavelength Lecture by Akram Zaatari
DESCRIPTION:Zaatari’s work is tied to the practice of collecting. He is deeply invested in researching photographic practices in the Middle East\, examining how photography served to shape notions of aesthetics\, postures and social codes. He is interested in looking at the present through a wealth of past photographic records. \nZaatari has been focusing since 1999 on the archive of Studio Shehrazade in Saida\, Lebanon\, studying\, indexing\, and presenting the work of photographer Hashem el Madani (1928–2017) as a register of social relationships and of photographic practices. \nZaatari’s work reflects on the shifting nature of borders and the production and circulation of images in the context of the current political divisions in the Middle East. His videos and photographic installations look into technologies of image production and communication and the notions of surveillance\, exploring the way different media apparatuses get employed in the service of power\, resistance\, and memory. \nThis lecture will be moderated by Noah Simblist\, Chair and Associate Professor\, from VCUarts in Richmond. \nPhotograph by Marco Milan. \nRegister now at https://icavcu.org/events/wavelength-akram-zaatari/

SUMMARY:Project Spaces
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition program highlight the creative diversity of our community\, as well as the eclectic range of materials and approaches involved in the individual art and design disciplines. It also provides them with opportunities to present the results of their current artistic explorations\, and is intended to inspire and stimulate the creative activity of the University at large. \nA unique opportunity to display their works at key locations in the building!\n2020-2021 \nFASH 402 – Accessory Design\nBy the Fashion Design Senior Students\, Class of 2021 \nIntroduced in 2019\, the Accessory Design course at the Fashion Design program at VCUarts Qatar aims to prepare students for real-world industry practices in the field of handbag design; from market analysis\, conceptualization\, first sketch to final commercial prototype.Through the design process\, students experiment with 2D manual and digital research techniques seeking to balance new ideas with commercial reality. The course shifts to 3D exploration\, where students build their first mockup with paper in order to understand proportions\, structure and construction techniques. How does the bag fit on a body? Is it ergonomic? How is it carried? Is it functional? How does it open and close? The selected final sketches and mockups are sent to Italy for production. With the support of VCUarts Qatar\, the Eco Lux Lab initiative and Rino Magnani – an Italian handbag master artisan – these designs have become a reality. Magnani assisted the students online with their design and 3D processes\, sharing his invaluable experience and techniques. The short video on display at the exhibition has been captured during a workshop where Magnani was presenting\, step by step\, the manufacturing process. The exhibited handbags are the first prototypes. Each handbag has been produced in three different colors to reflect commercial colorways. The pictures displayed in the glass gallery are the final handbags. These pieces will be on sale at the luxury accessory corner of the Fifty One East department store by the end of April 2021.The Accessory Design Class of 2021 would like to thank VCUarts Qatar\, the Eco Lux Lab\, and Christopher Fink for their support.A huge virtual applause to Rino Magnani and Anastasia Farnetti Merenda for their patience\, passion\, talent and sharing their immense knowledge with us.Participants:Students:Dana AhmedSafa al HadithiMedhawi AlobaidliRyan BasilioSidra SohailFaculty:Federica VisaniLocation: Glass display on the ground floor at VCUarts Qatar.________Parametric PaintingsBy Ahmed Nour \n \nPortraying a dragonfly in various stages of abstraction\, conveyed in digital paintings. The level of abstraction is determined by using Grasshopper to specify different parametric settings for each painting. \nLocation: First-floor glass case display at VCUarts Qatar.\n________ \nIDES 491 – Digital Formations\nBy Students: Asma Almohannadi\, Aldana Al-Meghisib\, Binsha Basheer\, Maha Masri\, Mariam Kraidli\, Maryam Al-Kuwari\, Osama Arabi Katbi\, Shaika Al-Meghaisib\, Shainah Dane Juras\, Yara Barakat.  \nBy Faculty: Mohammad Nabil Suleiman and Chris Buchakjian. \n \nDates: Feb 21 – Mar 11\, 2021 \n“Digital Formations” aims to research and experiment with different computational processes and workflows in arts and design. This exploration is situated in post-problem solving – seeking new forms\, tools\, and workflows where the output is not prescribed\, all the while attempting to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. The class (IDES 491: Topics in Interior Design) is not defined as a linear design process with objective outcomes\, but rather as the iterative\, non-linear\, and speculative process with the ability to reassess and shift our disciplinary discourse. \nIn this first module students explore tools and processes of making patterns with points and lines. These parametric forms start as data and flow from 2D to 3D; from the screen into the physical world . The hands-on construction allows space for tactile decision making. \nLocation: Project Spaces Glass Display\, First floor \n________ \nLu3’atna\nBy Students: Aldana Al-Marri\, Dana Ahmad\, Sara Mohammed\, and Zainab Al-Shibani\nFaculty: Robert Bianchi and Basma Hamdy \n \n‘Celebrating and Promoting Qatari Linguistic Culture through World Cup 2022’ was awarded $25\,000 in the 25th cycle of the UREP grant by the Qatar National Research Fund. The project involves five Junior students (now seniors) at VCUarts Qatar from the following majors: Graphic Design\, Interior Design\, Fashion Design\, and Art History. \n \nThe project is led by Robert Bianchi and Basma Hamdy\, both faculty members at VCUarts Qatar and began in Spring 2019 with a survey distributed to students across educational institutions in Qatar as well as members of the community. This was followed by a research and development phase where the content of the campaign was developed. Students and faculty met twice a week over the summer to develop\, curate and design content for the campaign initial. \nLocation: The Saffron Hall at VCUarts Qatar\n________ \nColorful Emotions\nBy Maryam Altajir \nThis exhibition showcases labializing feelings and emotions by exploring abstract Arabic calligraphy and colors to represent the unknown feelings and the label that defines them. From extensive classes in Arabic calligraphy to various experiments in handmade art\, the designer spent months understanding the correlations between well-being\, culture and design work. Although the objective of the branding was meant to be an outcome with neutral and limited expression\, an array of traces of the artist can be seen within the work. \nMay we always dare to show human entanglement in all of our work. We are torn\, bent and beautifully made for all to feel. \nProject led by: Zainab AlShibani\, Student\, Graphic Design department\, VCUarts Qatar \nDates: From Aug. 26 to Sept. 3\, 2019 \nLocation: Project Spaces – Library

SUMMARY:Writing Together
DESCRIPTION:The VCUarts Qatar Libraries and Research Office invite you to participate in Writing Together\, a 12-week online writing accountability group – a supportive online ‘place’ where you can set goals\, share writing tips\, discuss pitfalls\, and build momentum with your writing.  Come together with diverse academics from across Education City who\, like you\, are trying to get their writing done and their voices heard! \nThis initiative is for academics\, researchers\, scholars\, faculty\, and alumni who are looking to join an online writing group. Participants will be working independently to move forward on their individual writing projects. \nDuration: May 31 – August 16 (12 weeks) \nDate/Time: Sundays and Tuesdays from 10:00am until 1:00pm \nJoin as many sessions as you’d like\, or start slow with just one per week. \nThis group is for you\, if… \n\nyou crave uninterrupted time to read\, write\, and think.\nyou want to be held accountable\, and revive or refresh neglected projects.\nyou want to be ‘with’ others who face similar challenges\, yet want to feel good about writing instead of feeling stressed out.\nyou are tired of writing in isolation and looking for inspiration.\nyou are an educator and/or faculty member looking to move a writing project forward\, or a rising scholar working toward an advanced degree or Ph.D.\n\nHow Will I Benefit? \n\nEnjoy structure in a time when routine has been lost.\nMeet diverse academics from across Education City who\, like you\, are trying to get their writing done and their voices heard.\nEnjoy much needed positive social support and wrap up a writing project by the end of August.\n\nHow Does It Work? \nIt’s simple. \n\nAt the start of each online session\, group members ‘check-in’ to share measurable writing goals for that session.\nThen\, writers can either ‘leave’ the session or stay ‘online’ and write.\nDuring the second or ‘check-out’ session\, members confirm if they moved forward or met their goal\, what went to plan\, and what they hope to improve for the following session.\n\nThe idea is to build momentum through consistent practice. It is powerful\, and proven to work. \nThis program is fully subscribed.

SUMMARY:One of My Kind (OOMK) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How do you make sense of the news? What qualities allow you to trust what you are seeing? Our workshop with One of My Kind (OOMK) dives deeper into how we approach being media literate in the digital age. \nZinemaking is a form of handmade self-publishing\, usually expressing underground\, non-mainstream and often political ideas. In this workshop participants will have opportunities to work with different news media content\, both found and provided\, to lay bare the visual and rhetorical cues we internalize when we trust media sources. Over the workshop participants will work with news stories and facts related to a selected theme in order to explore and interrogate ideas surrounding constructions of the truth. \nCome and be introduced to the zinemaking practice\, its contemporary history of agitators\, and DIY cultures in new contexts. \nOne of My Kind (OOMK) \nOne of My Kind (OOMK) is a collaborative publishing platform. OOMK have lead workshops across the UK\, including at TATE Modern\, the Southbank Centre\, and the University of the Arts\, London. Working together since 2014\, they make\, publish and distribute books and printed works developed from self-initiated projects. OOMK also commission new works by women\, and co-curate DIY Cultures\, one of the UK’s largest annual independent publishing fairs. Their own zine\, OOMK Zine\, is a highly visual\, handcrafted small-press publication. Printed twice a year\, its content focuses on the imaginations\, creativity and spirituality of women\, each edition centering around a different creative theme\, with more general content exploring topics of faith\, activism and identity. With a focus on self-publishing and education\, OOMK founded and run a community printing press in East London\, Rabbits Road Press\, and work with museums\, educational institutions and self-organized groups to deliver workshops and produce collaborative publications. \nTickets \nOpen to all \nFor each of our programs there are a limited number of complementary university student tickets available\, one per student. Current student ID must be presented with ticket for entry. Complementary student tickets are available on a first come\, first served basis only through Eventbrite. \nFor more information:  https://mediamajlis.northwestern.edu/en/whats-on/event/deconstructing-truth-a-zinemaking-workshop-2020-02-25 \nThis program is in collaboration with The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar. \nThis program will be conducted in English; no simultaneous translation will be available.

DESCRIPTION:” We believe that design practices function as an instrument for social change\, emancipation and self-empowerment. “ – Disarming Design From Palestine \nIn this Crossing Boundaries Lecture\, Ghadeer Dajani\, the Design and Production Manager at Disarming Design From Palestine (DDFP)\, and Raed Hamouri\, the Executive Director at (DDFP) will talk about how occupation restricts craft and product development\, and where politics\, design and crafts meet. How can designers be empowered to more actively engage in society through collective design-thinking courses and social design impact? \nThe workshop participants will design new products based on the techniques of the items that each of them will bring to the workshops. They will then focus on their product’s narratives. What are the complexities? Is there a political dimension behind the product\, its production and distribution? What does it mean from a social and ecological perspective? \nDisarming Design from Palestine is a thought-provoking design label for the development and presentation of contemporary design from Palestine. The products vary from ceramics to toys\, and from fashion to household items. They are made by designers and artists who are working in collaboration with local producers\, and who are feeding innovative ideas for the production of crafts. \nImage: Courtesy of Disarming Design From Palestine

SUMMARY:The Sea is the Limit
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Sea is the Limit exhibition brings together works by international artists who are addressing the issues of refugees\, borders\, migration and national identity. Drawing on both historical and contemporary narratives that shape identity and opinion\, the artists question the meaning of nationalism\, free movement\, inclusion and exclusion. \nUsing the language of painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, video\, installation and virtual reality\, the artists explore some of the complex experiences and emotions associated with borders and migration\, statelessness and belonging. The works in the exhibition do not offer us solutions to the migrant crisis\, but instead draw our attention to its challenges in a meaningful way. \nArtists: Halil Altindere\, Mohammed Sami\, Nidhal Chamekh\, Susan Stockwell\, Taus Makhacheva and Varvara Shavrova \nCurator: Varvara Shavrova \nSpecial thanks to the Patrick Heide Art Contemporary Gallery\, London and the York Art Gallery\, York\, UK. \nCredit image: Susan Stockwell\, Traded Winds\, ©Susan Stockwell 2016\, ©photo Steve Hickey2016

SUMMARY:Crossing Boundaries Lecture by Lawrence Abu Hamdan
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 1st at 6:30 pm: Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium (MIA) \nTuesday\, April 2 at 12:45pm: VCUarts Qatar’s Atrium \nThis lecture\, the latest in his series of Abu Hamdan’s live audio essays examines the contemporary politics of listening\, and the importance of the earwitness. His multifaceted work takes a critical look at politics\, specifically how it relates to sound\, and the implications of today’s pervasive culture of surveillance and listening and recording technologies. One of the main focuses of this “hearing” is Abu Hamdan’s collaboration with Amnesty International and Forensic Architecture (an independent research agency based at the University of London) on an acoustic investigation into the prison of Saydnaya\, which is located 25 km north of Damascus. \nIn Birdwatching\, Abu Hamdan brings the audience through the earwitness testimony of survivors from Sayndaya prison near Damascus who were blindfolded or kept in total darkness for extremely long periods and who developed an acute sensitivity to sound. The prison is inaccessible to independent observers and monitors. The memories of those who survived it are the only resource available from which to learn of\, and document\, the violations still taking place there. However\, the capacity of detainees to see anything in Saydnaya was highly restricted as they were mostly kept in darkness\, blindfolded\, or made to cover their eyes. As a result\, the prisoners developed an acute sensitivity to sound. Through new and dedicated techniques of earwitness interviews created by Abu Hamdan\, the witnesses reconstructed the architecture and events of the prison they experienced through sound. \nBiography \nDescribed in a Bloomberg News article headlined as\, “The Art World Star You’ve Never Heard Of”\, his works are amongst the collections at the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York\, the Van AbbeMuseum in Eindhoven\, Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and the Tate Modern in London. \nLawrence Abu Hamdan’s interest with sound and its intersection with politics originate from his background as a touring musician and facilitator of DIY music. His audio investigations have been used as evidence at the UK’s Asylum and Immigration Tribunal and as advocacy for organizations such as Amnesty International and Defence for Children International. His forensic audio investigations were conducted as part of his research for Forensic Architecture at Goldsmiths College London where he received his PhD in 2017. Abu Hamdan is the author of the artist book [inaudible] : A politics of listening in 4 acts.  \nAbu Hamdan was the recipient of the 2018 Abraaj Group Art Prize and the winner of Art Basel’s 2018 Baloise Art Prize in the “Statements” sector. His film Rubber Coated Steel (2016) won the Tiger short film award at the Rotterdam International Film festival 2017 and his exhibition Earshot at Portikus Frankfurt (2016) won him the 2016 Nam June Paik Award for new media. Abu Hamdan was a 2017/2018 guest of the DAAD Kunstler Program in Berlin and the 2015-17 fellow at the Vera List Centre for Art and Politics at the New School in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at locations including Hammer Museum L.A (2018)\, Portikus Frankfurt (2016)\, Kunsthalle St Gallen (2015)\, Beirut in Cairo (2013)\, The Showroom\, London (2012)\, and Casco\, Utrecht (2012). His works are part of collections at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Guggenheim in New York\, the Van AbbeMuseum in Eindhoven\, Centre Pompidou in Paris\, and the Tate Modern in London. \nImage credit: Courtesy of the artist and Maureen Paley Gallery\, London.

SUMMARY:-162˚ Trading Power
DESCRIPTION:At -162°C natural gas becomes liquid\, shrinking its volume by 600 times\, thus becoming a very convenient commodity to trade. Japan is the top LNG purchaser for Qatar\, and Qatar is the top provider to Japan. Although mostly economic this unique agreement impacts culture\, lifestyle\, and geopolitics\, consequently creating a bridge between two distant countries. \nIn 2011 a devastating tsunami and earthquake shook Japan and crippled their nuclear energy production thus making the country more reliant on natural gas. Following this disaster\, Qatar strengthened their unique bond with Japan by offering large quantities of LNG at competitive prices. \nLNG is mostly odourless\, colourless and almost weightless\, but becomes very tangible once fed into Japan’s infrastructure reaching its citizens and allowing them to cook and heat their homes. LNG has also impacted transportation and industry\, becoming the propellant for the new Tokyo Taxis in preparation of the 2020 Summer Olympics\, and is used in the production of paper\, clay\, glass\, plastic\, petroleum and food processing. \nIn Qatar\, LNG has become the pillar of the national economy and wealth and plays a crucial role in the domestic and foreign policies. It has fueled the growth of education among its citizens\, and is the catalyst for recent developments that have shaped the country in preparation for the 2022 World Cup. \nThis kinetic exhibition explores the significance of LNG relations between Japan and Qatar using 40 floating printers that source relevant text and images from the internet. SUMMARY:QAL
DESCRIPTION:The initial idea of this project was to make a connection between ancient Persian art icons and link them to a new design objective in the form of an installation. The key elements were Persian carpets and Persian gardens which were inspired by the idea of an earthly paradise. It proliferated spread through Persian literature from the time of the Achaemenid Dynasty. Such gardens would have been enclosed. The garden’s purpose was to provide a protected place to relax and for spiritual\, and leisure purposes. \nPersian carpets were made for a wide variety of utilitarian and symbolic purposes. They were produced in Iran and the surrounding areas which once belonged to the Persian Empire and were used at home\, sold locally\, and exported to other parts of the region and further abroad. The tradition and style of Persian gardens has influenced the design of gardens from Andalusia to India and beyond. In contrast with traditional carpets\, QAL is not a single pattern. It is mortal. It dies in one second. QAL’s patterns are created in real time by hands moving through the light. The carpet is created by an accumulation of patterns on a transparent vertical screen. The laptop’s screen projects white light towards the hands of the viewer which starts to generate patterns made by its movements. The result is a new\, highly detailed\, physical carpet in very high resolution. Over 60 patterns can be generated in one second. Some of them have been captured and are printed on canvases within the exhibition. Because of the countless possibilities of different parameters\, such as the amount of light in the gallery\, the sizes and the positions of hands and skin colors\, the patterns are unique and it is almost impossible to recreate the same one. Some of these patterns was part of the LAND\, Ali Phi’s solo show. \nThe Art Trail Tour offered by Qatar Foundation is scheduled on Thursday\, March 14 at 12:30pm in presence of the artist. \nELEMAUN BY: ALI PHI \nA performance-driven audiovisual project started in 2010 will be presented on March 14 at 6pm at VCUarts Qatar Atrium. It is concentrated on Persian motifs\, the forgotten essence of Iran as an inspirational region and the middle-eastern philosophy. It is an electronic reproduction and sampling of ritual and regional music of Iran\, and its rhythms and patterns are the main material of this project in both formats of sound and visual. \nAli Phi is media artist and interaction designer. His works explore connections between programming\, generative audio-visual design\, interactive media and immersive environment installations. His explorations in media arts started with the project Elemaun in 2008 as an audio-visual performance. \nAli Phi’s works depict the relationship between point\, line\, plane\, light and darkness. The digital process and flexibility in his works are an interrelation and a diverse and growing alteration between today’s media and capacities of presentation. The flow of his works is to establish a relationship between video presentations\, programming and converting sounds into images\, and vice versa. It aims to shift the process of showing movement into images and to interconnect all those elements and how they have been transformed by computer. \nHe is the founder of Nullsight\, a media lab and art collective in Tehran and freelance festival curator of TADAEX– Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition. Ali Phi has performed and exhibited his works at international festivals including Ars Electronica\, Mutek AE\, and Patchlab\, and had several media art installations in public spaces such as an exhibition for Monson Group and project SHYM in an under-construction building. \nThe opening of the exhibition will take place in the presence of the artist. \nOpening hours: Saturday to Thursday – From 9am to 5pm / Friday – Closed \nSpecial thanks to Mohsen Gallery\, Iran. \nImage courtesy of the artist.
