About Us

Mission Statement

The Writing Center's goal is to promote excellence in writing and academic success. We are, first and foremost, a teaching center, and thus, are here to assist students in becoming more confident and capable in their writing abilities. We do this by relating to the writing process and individualizing sessions to support writers' unique skills.

At The Writing Center, we provide one-on-one consultations, writing resources, in-class workshops, and a comfortable place to write. Our philosophy begins with conceiving of writing as a process of invention, drafting, and revision. Though this process is not always linear and direct, we believe that writers benefit from thoughtful responses and supportive instruction. In our consultations, we engage in a dialogue with writers to help them develop their writing and become more effective and confident in their work.

Since our mission is to empower writers, we do not work for them but with them. For this reason, we do not copy edit papers but instead teach writers self-proofreading skills. We do this through dialogue, error pattern analysis, and the teaching of strategies to identify and improve upon writing weaknesses.

Students are welcome to use our services at any phase of their writing process, whether they have just received an assignment, are brainstorming for ideas, or are in the final stages of their writing project. Our services are not limited to course-related assignments. Our instructors work with writers on any task, including applications, résumés, and artist statements.
