Congratulations to the Tasmeem Doha 2017 team!

The event’s catalogue has been named as one of the winners of the AIGA Eye on Design’s 50 Books | 50 Covers of 2019 competition. The AIGA (originally the American Institute of Graphic Arts) is a professional membership organization for design with more than 70 chapters and more than 18,000 members.

Book designers and publishers entered nearly 800 book and cover designs from 32 countries and this year’s jury recognized submissions that successfully demonstrate design excellence in the book and cover categories.

The winning selections will become a part of a permanent, accessible, and historic collection of notable graphic design in the AIGA Design Archives. The books become part of the AIGA collection at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University’s Butler Library in the city of New York.

The jurors—Michael Bierut, chair, Hilary Greenbaum, Lisa Lucas, and Silas Munro—evaluated each work’s integrated design approach, including concept, innovation, and visual elements such as typography, illustration, and/or information design.

Tasmeem Doha is VCUarts Qatar’s biennial international art and design conference focusing on unique and contemporary themes within art and design. Each conference explores new ways of thinking, making, seeing and learning.

The Tasmeem Doha 2017 co-chairs were VCUarts Qatar professors Michael Perrone and Marco Bruno, and VCUarts professor John Freyer. The catalogue designers were VCUarts Qatar Art Director Sara Shaaban, and VCUarts professor Lauren Thorson.

Other members who contributed to the success include photographers Raviv Cohen and alumna Leila Natsheh and the Penumbra Foundation, the Communications department at VCUarts Qatar, and the Events, Strategic Community Engagement, Gallery, Technology Services, Library, and Facilities & Safety teams, all at VCUarts Qatar, as well as the Communications department at VCUarts in Richmond.
