Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts has once again made the top of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate School rankings. The rankings, completed in 2016, are based on a fall 2015 survey of art school deans and other top art school academics.

In Fine Arts Programs, VCUarts is the number one ranked public program, tied for that honor with University of California – Los Angeles. In the overall program rank for both public and private programs, VCU’s School of the Arts has moved from number four to number two, once again tied with UCLA, and right behind Yale University’s number one position.

“Our faculty and staff dedicate an extraordinary amount of time and effort into developing their curricula and educating our student artists,” says Dean Joseph H. Seipel. “Our faculty research and their creative achievements, as well as that of our alumni, are all part of the VCUarts signature. We are pleased to be recognized by our peers for the quality of our program.”

New rankings for specialty areas (both public and private) include: Sculpture #1, Glass #3 (tie), Graphic Design #7, Painting #7, Ceramics #9 (tie), and Printmaking #10.

According to U.S. News and World Report, the Master of Fine Arts program rankings are based solely on the results of a peer assessment survey. These rankings, completed in 2016, are based on a fall 2015 survey of art school deans and other top art school academics, one per school, at 229 Master of Fine Arts programs in art and design.

Respondents were asked to rate the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). Scores for each school were totaled and divided by the number of respondents who rated that school.
