Artist-in-Residence Program

The VCUarts Qatar Painting and Printmaking Artist-in-Residence Program brings emerging artists to work within the Department of Painting and Printmaking as artists-in-residence. This international post-MFA fellowship aims to bring the best in talent from an international context to benefit our Painting and Printmaking students in VCUarts Qatar.

Artists-in-Residence work in a specially provided studio, engage in research, exhibit, mentor and teach within the program, and, along with the faculty, students and visiting artists, help to create a community of artists engaged in scholarly activity and research.

Open Call for 2020/21 Artists-in-Residency

The department supports two international post-MFA Artists-in-Residence.
2020/21 Applications are due by April 30, 2020, 11:59 pm US Eastern Standard Time.

Residency period:
August 2020 through mid-May 2021.

Eligibility and Qualifications:

- Recent MFA (or equivalent) graduates from international fine art programs are eligible to apply. Students must have graduated no earlier than 2017 and be within three years from graduation.

- Applicants must have a valid driving license.

Artist-in-Residence receives:

- 24-hour access to a shared studio located within VCUarts Qatar as well as access to all Painting, Printmaking, Photography Studios.

- Part-time teaching experience, and mentorship for teaching.

- Solo or two-person exhibition in Doha with catalogue.

- Artists-in-Residence are eligible for a $30,000 stipend, plus additional emoluments including housing and auto.

- Return plane ticket from home location to Doha, Qatar.

Artist-in-Residence responsibilities:

- Teach 1-2 courses in the Painting and Printmaking Department each semester. Courses may include Basic Drawing, Painting, or Printmaking. Depending on the artist-in-residence’s skill set, there may be a possibility to teach one special topics course of their own design.

- Maintain office hours for each course taught, participate in departmental/school critiques, lectures, events, and mentor department majors.

- Assist with freshman recruitment into the Painting and Printmaking major.

- Develop a body of work within their studio in preparation for a solo or two-person exhibition at the end of the residency.

- Give a public lecture.

- Donate one work to the VCUarts Qatar collection.

Submit images 1-10 together in one pdf, no larger than 9 MB:

- Portfolio of Images 1-10 should reflect recent work (within 3 years).

- You may submit a link to a digital portfolio for time-based work. Please include the documentation for linked work on the Documentation list (#6 on Supporting Document 1).

DOCUMENT 3: PORTFOLIO PART 2 (images 11-20)

Submit images 11-20 together in one pdf, no larger than 9 MB:

- Portfolio of Images 11-20 should reflect recent work (within 3 years).
