Biography

Marco Bruno is an architect, an unaware artist and a motorcycle enthusiast.

After twenty-one and one half years or uninterrupted studies between Italy and the US, Marco started his working career in Hollywood as a model maker in an Oscar-nominated special effect company.

Marco become a registered architect in Italy, and in the beginning of the millennium, he moved to Seoul, where together with Simone Carena, lifetime friend and working partner, opened MOTOElastico: as far as today, the best Italian Architecture Office in both Koreas [we are the only one!].

MOTOElastico is an experimental space-lab working on architecture, interior and art projects; the goal is to challenge local cultures through unexpected combinations of original ingredients. Its design process is similar to the one used by Dub DJs: enhancing rhythms and underlining features of existing songs, with the purpose of generating new yet familiar design tunes. MOTOElastico in the past ten years has completed buildings [the Dub Hanok renovation received the 2010 AIDIA Best Design Award], private and commercial interiors projects [Louis Quatorze, Duemio, Ratia and FUBU Flagship Stores] and few art installations. In 2011 was invited to participate in the 54th Art Biennale in Venice where MOTOElastico presented Tank Bang, a movable bang [bang=room in Korean] made of altered anti-riot police shields in a roman testudo formation. MOTOElastico recent major projects include the design of the Citizen Gallery at the new Seoul City Hall, opening in January 2013, and the interior coordination of Dongdaemun Design Plaza designed by Zaha Hadid. More projects are on the go between Italy, Korea and Qatar, including the participation to the “Made in Qatar” Exhibition during the 2013 Tasmeen Conference.

Marco professional practice moves along and constantly feeds his academic activity: he has been teaching architecture, interior and basic space design for the past ten years in several Korean University, among which Hanyang and Korea University in Seoul and KAIST in Daejong.

Research Interests

During his permanence in Seoul, Marco has been intensively researching on the way people, in very dense Korean urban environments, use public space for their own private benefit. It is a phenomenon he calls “Borrowed City”, which affects more and more the daily experience of people living in overcrowded areas, where space has become a very precious resource. Borrowing space is a necessary form of sharing: it is a way to optimize resources and an opportunity to creatively use public space.

The result of his research will be soon published in Korea. Marco is looking forward to explore Doha and understand how the urban borrowing takes place in Qatar. To begin with the exploration he bought a red motorcycle.
