Academic and Career Advising

The Department of Academic and Career Advising, in addition to assisting students with course selection and academic and career planning, facilitates the personal and professional growth of students through a collaborative advising process. The department assists students with their transition and integration into the university community and provides educational and career planning services throughout the students’ journey from admission to graduation and beyond.

Academic Advisor Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with program chairs/directors to provide accurate information regarding degree program requirements and other important information regarding the majors
  • Provide accurate information regarding institutional and academic policies and procedures
  • Refers students to appropriate campus resources as necessary
  • Assists students with academic and personal/professional goal setting
  • Monitors students academic progress towards degree completion
  • Assists freshmen with their transition into the VCUQatar community 
  • Serves as their advisees strongest advocate in the university 

Career Advisor Responsibilities

  • Provides support to students in the areas related to career development including personal branding, CV/resume writing, portfolio preparation, interviewing, social media, job searching, and choosing/applying to graduate school.
  • Administers various assessments and assist students in utilizing the results for effective career planning
  • Assists students in the development of professional/soft skills that they can market to future employers
  • Collaborates with Education City institutions to organize the annual career fair to connect students with employers

Student Responsibilities

  • Schedule/attend regular meetings with their advisor 
  • Come prepared for meetings with selected courses, questions, and/or points for discussion
  • Check email regularly for registration information, announcements, deadlines, and other pertinent information
  • Provide relevant decision-making information
  • Maintain records of academic progress and have knowledge of Degree Works for understanding degree requirements
  • Ensure course registration is complete and accurate prior to the last day off the drop/add period of each term
  • Understand academic regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Assume responsibility for their educational program and planning
  • Be proactive in seeking out advice in regards to academic and professional/career planning
