  • Will I earn a VCU or a VCUarts Qatar degree?
    • You will earn your degree from VCU. While your transcripts will indicate that your courses were complete at VCUarts Qatar, your degree will not. Your diploma is issued by VCU in Richmond, Virginia, USA.

About Applying to VCUarts Qatar

  • Are the application deadlines really that strict?
    • Yes, they are. Please plan ahead. Applicants are encouraged to start preparing their admission applications as soon as the application portal opens (generally mid September).  They must submit the required application materials by the stated deadline dates. Earlier is always preferred, in the interest of planning.
  • Does VCUarts Qatar charge a fee to apply for admission?
    • VCUarts Qatar does not charge an application fee.

  • What is the percentage grade required on the Thanaweya for admission as a freshman to VCUarts Qatar?
    • 80% or higher.
  • What are the high school grades required for admission as a freshman to VCUarts Qatar?
    • Qatar Thanaweya: 80% or higher
    • U.S. system: 3.00/4/00 cumulative gpa or higher
    • U.K. system: 5-6 IGSC or 3 AS subject tests with A or B grades
    • In short, VCUarts Qatar looks for academically strong students
  • How many IGCSE subjects does VCUarts Qatar require for admission as a freshman?
    • 5-6
  • How many AS Subject Tests does VCUarts Qatar require for admission as a freshman?
    • At least 3, with A or B grades.
  • Is completion of the IB program required for admission at a freshman student to VCUarts Qatar?
    • It is not required. Students may complete the IB program, or an independent curriculum, or AP course work, or CIE exams, etc.
  • Which subjects do freshman applicants have to take during high school to meet VCUarts Qatar’s application requirements?
    • While no specific subjects are required, applicants must have completed a college preparatory curriculum during this secondary education. Furthermore, they must have completed their courses successfully, and with high grades (i.e. cumulative grade point average of 3.00/4.00 scale or higher, or its equivalent). 
  • My high school does not offer art classes. Can I still apply for admission to VCUarts Qatar?
    • Yes, you can. We encourage you to attend VCUarts Qatar's Community Education Program, with classes offered in the evenings or during weekends. The Community Education Program is open to the community, including aspiring VCUarts Qatar students.  
  • I graduated from high school more than 10 years ago. Can I still apply for admission to VCUarts Qatar?
    • Yes, you may. VCUarts Qatar does not discriminate on the basis of age.
  • Can you return my high school transcripts to me after you’ve assessed them?
    • No, we cannot. All items submitted to VCUarts Qatar as part of your application for admission become the property of VCUarts Qatar. They cannot be returned or forwarded.

About English Language Proficiency

  • Which English Language Proficiency Test must I take?
    • VCUarts Qatar accepts the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International Engish Language System Test (IELTS). Please note that we do not accept TOEIC or Pearson’s.
  • Where can I take the English Language Proficiency Test?
    • Applicants must make test-arrangements directly with ETS (for TOEFL) or the British Council (for IELTS).
  • I speak English at home. Can I be exempted from the English Language Proficiency Test requirement?
    • Applicants who are citizens of the following countries may be exempted from the English language proficiency test: Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA.
  • What is the minimum English Language Proficiency Test requirement for admission?
    • TOEFL: 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) 80 (internet-based), or higher.
    • IELTS:  6.0 overall band score, or higher.
  • Does VCUarts Qatar offer preparation classes for the required English language proficiency tests?
    • No, VCUarts Qatar does not. Test materials and practice tests are available online at ETS (for TOEFL) or the British Council (for IELTS).
  • Can I submit English proficiency test scores that are already two years old?
    • No. English proficiency test requirements may not be more than 2 years old on the day they are submitted to VCUarts Qatar, provided also that you have submitted your application online.

About SAT and ACT

  • Does VCUarts Qatar require ACT or SAT test scores?
    • No, we do not.

About the Art Portfolio

  • Do I need to submit an Art Portfolio?
    • Applicants interested in VCUarts Qatar Bachelor of Fine Arts programs (BFA) in Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, and Painting and Printmaking, or the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Design, are required to submit an art portfolio. Applicants applying to the Art History program do not submit an art porfolio. Instead, they submit an essay.
  • How do I prepare an art portfolio?
  • Does VCUarts Qatar offer art portfolio development classes?
    • Yes. Our Art Portfolio Development Classes are offered multiple times each fall. The courses are extremely popular, so please sign up early. See: http://www.qatar.vcu.edu/community
  • Will taking an art portfolio development class guarantee my acceptance to VCUarts Qatar?
    • No, it cannot, as admission to VCUarts Qatar is highly competitive. Taking an Art Portfolio Development Class will, however, greatly help you in understanding how to put together a strong art portfolio that meets requirements.
  • Can I get feedback on my art portfolio before submitting it with my application for admission?
    • Yes. Each year, VCUarts Qatar holds an "Art Portolio Review"-session where applicants can seek feedback on their art portfolios from VCUarts Qatar faculty prior to submitting the portfolio as part of their application for admission. "Art Portfolio Review" is generally held in January. Applicants will be notified of the specifics.

About Transferring to VCUarts Qatar from Another University

  • I have already attended another university. Can I transfer to VCUarts Qatar?
    • Yes, you may. VCUarts Qatar welcomes transfer students. Admission as a transfer student is competitive and subject to space availability in the program.
  • The medium of instruction at the University from where I wish to transfer was Arabic. Can I receive transfer credits for courses completed in Arabic?
    • Yes, you may. Transfer credit is assessed on the basis of the university being accredited (officially recognized), and on the courses you’ve completed being transferrable on the basis of credits and grades.
  • Can I receive university-level credits for having completed the IB program? Or taking AP courses, or CIE exams?
    • Yes, you may. The transferability of IB, AP, or CIE courses/exams is prescribed in the VCU Undergraduate Bulletin.
  • Does VCUarts Qatar accept transfer credits from the Community College of Qatar?
    • No, it does not.
  • Are the application requirements the same for transfer students as they are for freshman students at VCUarts Qatar?
    • Transfer students must meet the same, as well as additional requirements, as compared to freshman students. Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts listing all university-level courses completed; course description or syllabi of each course; as well as an external foreign credential evaluation performed by (preferably) World Education Services or another foreign credential assessment agency accredited by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). The foreign credential evaluation is required only when academic work was completed at a university outside of the USA.
  • Can you assess my university-level transfer credits before I apply?
    • No, we cannot. University level transfer credits will be assessed after an admission decision is made.
  • Can you return my university/college transcripts to me after you’ve assessed them?
    • No, we cannot. All items submitted to VCUarts Qatar as part of your application for admission become the property of VCUarts Qatar. They cannot be returned or forwarded.

About Full Time and Part Time Enrollment

  • What is “full time” enrollment?
    • Being a full time student means you attend courses full-time. For undergraduate-level students at VCUarts Qatar that means being enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per semester, though students are more commonly enrolled in 15 credit hours per semester.  Courses are generally 3 credit hours, whereby 12-15 credits suggests, on average, being enrolled in 4-5 courses per semester simultaneously.
  • Can I attend classes in the evenings only?
    • No, you cannot. At VCUarts Qatar undergraduate courses are generally scheduled throughout the day. Some courses may be scheduled during early evening.
  • Can I attend classes for two or three days a week instead of the whole week?
    • This is not a choice students can make. Students at VCUarts Qatar register for courses in accordance with their program. Generally, each separate course is scheduled over 2-5 days a week. A full-time schedule of courses generally spreads over all weekdays.
  • Can I choose on which days, or at what time in the day, I attend classes?
    • You will choose classes on the basis of your academic level, academic program, and course pre-requisites. While there may be some flexibility and choice as to the classes you take, generally speaking classes are offered during the week (Sunday-Thursday) and between 8:00am-7:00pm.  

About Costs of Studying at VCUarts Qatar, Scholarships and Financial Aid (student loans)

  • What is the tuition fee at VCUarts Qatar?
  • What other costs should I consider?
    • Please consider costs of books and class materials in addition to the cost of tuition. International students should also consider costs of transportation (flights and local transportation), housing, meals, and miscellaneous expenses including clothes, toiletries and entertainment.
  • Does VCUarts Qatar charge an application fee to apply for admission?
    • VCUQatar does not currently charge an application fee for undergraduate or graduate applicants. 
  • Does VCUarts Qatar offer scholarships? What are the requirements for being awarded a scholarship?
    • VCUarts Qatar does not offer scholarships. However, scholarships are made available to VCUarts Qatar students by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs  (MADLSA) for Qatari citizens; and by the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) of the Qatar Foundation (QF) for those who are citizens of countries other than Qatar.
  • Does VCUarts Qatar offer financial aid (student loans)? What are the requirements for financial aid (student loans)?
    • VCUarts Qatar does not offer financial aid (student loans). However, need-based loans are made available to VCUarts Qatar students by the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) of the Qatar Foundation (QF).
  • What is the process for applying for scholarships or financial aid (student loans)?
  • Does VCUarts Qatar offer an installment payment plan?
    • VCUarts Qatar offers an installment payment plan on behalf of the Qatar Foundation. Please contact the Office of Finance Services at VCUarts Qatar for further information.
