About this class

Kufic is one of the oldest calligraphic forms of Arabic scripts; it developed around the end of the 7th century. Kufic’s decorative character led to its use as a decorative element in buildings, flags and coins.

Wednesday

  • Introduction to square Kufic
  • Learning the basics of Kufic and rules
  • Sketching ideas on grids

Thursday

  • Working on Kufic design composition
  • Finalizing the work

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy and bring the following materials.

  • Clutch Pencil 1 mm
  • Pencil (HB or B or 2B)
  • Eraser
  • Sharpener
  • Colored Pencils
  • Ruler
  • 10 sheets of 5 mm graph or grid paper

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Mona Makhlouf
Lecturer

Mona Makhlouf is an MFA candidate at VCUQ. She is an interdisciplinary designer with a BFA in Graphic Design, also from VCUQ. Her experience varies from working in design firms to teaching at the American University in Cairo.

Her passion for history, culture and art in all its forms led her to learn about Arabic calligraphy and Kufic script by the Egyptian artist Muhammed elMahdy. She believes in the value of music, design and multicultural conversations.
