About this class

This course will introduce you to the basics of shoe making (flats).  Though a series of short exercises and hands on experimentation, you will learn how to make personalized shoes from available resources around you. You will gain an insight not into what shoes are but what they can be.

Class Outline
  1. Introduction to shoe terminology: Types of shoes, parts and components; Foot anatomy; Measuring your feet
  2. Pattern making on paper
  3. Pattern making continued
  4. Selection of final pattern; Mirroring and conversion into final material
  5. Assembling the shoe (upper)
  6. Assembling the shoe continued  (attaching the sole)
  7. Finishing and ornamentation
  8. Presentation of final Pair of shoe

  • Notebook
  • A3 paper sheets for pattern making
  • Pencils HB
  • Felt tip pens (0.3mm)
  • Cutter, Scissor, UHU stick glue, Super glue, Eraser
  • Threads and needles
  • Material options for shoe making will be discussed in class

Note: Depending on your project and as per instruction by your lecturer, some extra materials may become required for you to buy for the class

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Wajiha Pervez
Lecturer

Wajiha is an Interdisciplinary designer, maker, materials enthusiast and traveler from Pakistan. She completed her graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar and is currently an artist in residence at the Firestation Artist in Residence. Living between Netherlands, Qatar and Pakistan, Wajiha has gained knowledge of a broad spectrum of international design. Dividing her time between work, exhibitions, research and workshops, Wajiha aims to share her knowledge and create meaningful dialogues between human, environment and culture through design interaction.
