In this course, students learn how to build a dynamic Fashion Portfolio.
Students will be introduced to creating a basic portfolio of fashion design work, including a mood-board (showing color palettes, fabrics, and fashion design ideas), design concept development, working drawings, and final Illustrations.
Students will have an opportunity to explore various aspects of fashion design, not only the art and design fields including drawing, painting, and design, but also different professional areas, such as history, socio-economics, and culture.
Class Outline

Brief introduction to the fashion design development process, major materials, and professional terminologies. Discuss goals and experiences of students. Look at portfolio samples. (Visit Fashion Design Department at VCUQatar and tour around different major departments). Brief introduction to Fashion Illustration History. Observational fashion illustration with pencils, pens, and markers (lines, values, fabric folds and patterns, and design details).
Observational Fashion illustration with varying styles (compositions, media, and poses). Start a mood board (Collage using various magazines). Research trends such as color, mood, trends, and materials (Google+ folders). Discuss about creative fashion sketches and color theory.
Brief introduction to Fashion History (Art and Design History). Observational drawing on shapes or forms like boxes, cylinders, sphere, and cones which are the basic to understand body parts (Perspective). Fashion mood board continued (Collage). Define your design philosophy.
Sketches for collection (Creative fashion design). Brief introduction to garment construction (Paper or fabric). Tips for documentation (Sketching, Photography or Scan).
Finalize design details for a collection with chosen themes and resources. Select cohesive designs for your portfolio and also for the look book (or a magazine).
Creative fashion design and construction continued (Experience garment construction on mannequins). Introduce non-conventional fashion design approaches (Opportunity of exploring mixed media).
Edit fashion portfolio in its layout and flow. Finalize promotional tools such as look books, magazines, or window displays.
Work on chosen designs. Design signature prints for textiles.
Complete at least one look and prepare for the exhibition.
Finalize projects for presentation followed by critique.
Materials needed

Items to buy for this class
Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class
1 pad of A3 all-purpose paper or Bristol paper
1 A3 watercolor paper pad from Winsor & Newton (Optional)
A3 sketch pad for rough sketching
1 pad of tracing paper in A3 (preferred). If not available, A4 is fine
Pencils of 2B and 4B and 1 artist eraser
1 pencil sharpener
Bring minimum three different magazines including one fashion magazine (Crucial for class activities)
A pair of scissors and a knife for cutting paper
A pair of fabric scissors if possible
Set of black fine liner pens 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 (Waterproof)
Set of colored pencils (at least 12 colors)
Set of artist quality gouache paints (Recommend Winsor & Newton) or Set of artist quality watercolors
Two water containers with a lid if possible
Ceramic or Plastic Pallet with wells
Set of brushes (suitable for gouache and watercolor)
Watercolor Brushes: No.12 or No.10 synthetic round, 1 or 2 inch flat brush or a large hake, No. 2 or No.4 flat synthetic with stiff bristles for scrubbing, a rigger brush, and one of No.4 or No.6 synthetic round
1 roll of masking tape
Color markers and either cool grey or warm grey markers (Optional)
1 ruler of about 18 inches
1 A2 Newsprint paper pad for marker sketching
1 chisel tipped black marker (Sharpie):
Charcoal (light, medium, and dark) and black ink (Optional)
On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Instructors
Yang Soon Ju
Yang Soon Ju (Elizabeth) is an interdisciplinary designer and entrepreneur with an MFA in Design Studies and a BFA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar. She has engaged with numerous projects/events and developed designs/collections in partnership with community organizations: to name a few, Doha Film Institute, Tim MakowerArchitects, Sidra Medicine/Hospital, Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition, Doha Festival City, and Galeries Lafayette and Tasmeem Biennial Art and Design Conference. Her entrepreneurial positions in Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Qatar span two decades, ranging from founding an English-speaking school; textile trading, and designing/producing household items and specialty clothing, as well as marketing those products, to consulting in financial auditing/ bookkeeping and business management. In addition to her entrepreneurial initiatives, she currently teaches in the Fashion Design department and Continuing Education and Community/Continuing education programs at VCUarts Qatar.
