The Gallery at VCUarts Qatar

The Gallery at VCUarts Qatar is pleased to present YA 3ASAL, an exhibition by artist and designer Sarah Elawad.

Referencing a common Arabic term of endearment (“يا عسل” – ‘Hey, Honey!’), Elawad also invokes the romance and seduction of sweets. Trained as a graphic designer, she explores iconic treats and candies of the MENA not only as cultural markers, but as enticing graphic and visual forms—elaborating and exaggerating these in playful typologies.

Ars Electronica 2025: Ghūl · غول
Ars-Electronica-2025

September 3-7, 2025
Linz, Austria

Popularized as “ghoul,” the ghūl ( غول ) is a mischievous and malevolent creature of Arabian folklore. Spellcasters and shapeshifters, ghul mimic human forms and behaviors in their efforts to ensnare their prey. In Ghūl this folkloric archetype provides an expansive and playful framework for exploring how the systems we build—technological, cultural, economic, ecological, etc.—hunt, haunt and hypnotize us. How do we see ourselves and our values reflected in these systems and the traps they set?

Matter Diplopia is VCUQatar’s first exhibition with the London Design Biennale. It is a collaborative effort of faculty, students, and alumni, representing diverse perspectives and disciplines. It features an array of experimental and exploratory projects that integrate traditional modes of making with emergent technology. Framed by the duality of the built environment and heritage, the installations are rooted in cultural legacy and material innovation.

Ruins, Derelicts, and Erasure
Rde 2

In the works featured in the exhibition, each artist is responding to the act of erasure as a form of preserving and resilience to preserve the heritage, culture, and history of each nation. Each project featured explores the theme through two forms of documentation: mapping of lived human experience and material agency.
