D05) The Art of Pattern Design

Sdasdasda

About this class

The course intends to give you a glimpse into the vast world of patterns, starting off with a brief history of their development across centuries. However, the course will focus on and expand upon Qatari patterns, and teach effective, creative, yet simple methods to recreate them. The main objective is to enable you to transform, modernize, and express traditional patterns in both 2- and 3-dimensional applications. Eventually, you should be fully capable of viewing patterns through a different lens and appreciating their complexity and importance beyond what is merely decorative or visual.

Class Outline

Understanding patterns

  • Introducing, defining and explaining patterns, their types, and their history from prehistoric to modern period, while expanding on Islamic patterns.
  • Explicating traditional Qatari patterns: their origin, as well as importance.

Creating new from old

  • Explaining how to develop and create patterns using different types of grids and guidelines.
  • Demonstrating how to transform traditional patterns and create multiple variations from a single pattern.

Enhacing patterns with colors

  • Developing and finalizing one detailed pattern by students.
  • Creating a harmonious range of colors to enhance the components of the final pattern.

  • Demonstrating how the context, product or item, in which patterns are used, affects a pattern’s configuration, and how its configuration, in turn, affects its visual quality.
  • Explaining two basic, yet convenient methods to reproduce patterns on items.

Reproducing patterns as a 3D art

  • Printing patterns on items of students’ choice to explore patterns in a 3-dimentional world.
  • Sharing final thoughts…

Amani Abbara

As an interior designer I perceive art and craftsmanship as imperative components of design. Gaining and teaching design and art skills is interesting and deeply rewarding. I pursued a rigorous and diverse career experience full of design problems and real challenges, and this is exactly what I aspire to do for the rest of my professional life; to design, meet new people, research, experiment, inspire and spread valuable knowledge. Currently, I am working on developing my design aesthetic or brand which is defined by “responsive” or interactive spaces and products
