FID01) Interior Design (Basics)

About this class

This course enables individuals interested in interior design to have hands-on experience through a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach for their interiors. From this course, one will be able to work independently and to be efficient with their existing resources to build dream interiors.

Individuals will have fun exploring materials and playing with objects within different spaces. This course will emphasize learning to be creative with existing materials, furniture, and objects and discovering how to make them look trendy and creative yet functional through a DIY makeover.

This highly-focused course introduces online tools to equip individuals to carry on with their design interests outside class. End lesson of this program will enrich students’ understanding of interior design elements by including education in design foundation and by teaching quick and quality DIY interiors. 

Class Outline

1. Introduction to class. Start conversation and brainstorming session. Discuss chosen space, layout ideation, and alternative solutions.
2.  A guide to choosing style, with case studies examples. Understanding the illusion of transformation with colors and materials. Advantages of natural lighting versus artificial lighting in space.
3. Create a concept board along with space layout.
4. Awareness of the environmental benefits of renovating and redesigning. DIY tips, such as how to reuse and transform existing furniture and other items in your homes.
5. Sketching techniques for your space, with new layout and style.
6. Presentation and critique.

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class.

• Eraser and ruler
• 2B pencil
• Fine line marker, black 0.8, 0.5, 0.3 (Usually comes in a set), Prismacolor brand recommended
• A4 sketchbook
• Old /new Interior magazines (such as Glam Interior, Vogue Interior, etc.)
• Laptop

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.
