About this class

Photographic Sketching is an engaging course that delves into the art of converting photographs into captivating sketches, employing an array of diverse media. Ranging from classic pencil and charcoal techniques to vibrant watercolors and innovative crayon approaches, participants will uncover the distinct allure of Polaroid camera photography. The course ends in a digital exhibition that presents their artistic evolution.

Class Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Photographic Sketching 

  • Understanding the concept of Photographic Sketching and learning how to capture the mood of a photograph.

Day 2: Pencil and Charcoal Sketching 

  • Exploring sketching with pencils and pens and creating dramatic artworks with charcoal.

Day 3: Ink

  • Utilizing ink to add depth and contrast to sketches.

Day 4: Watercolor 

  • Exploring vibrant watercolor techniques.

Day 5: Polaroid Camera Photography and Sketching 

  • Outside classroom activity: capturing images with a Polaroid camera and using Polaroid photos as an inspiration for sketching.

Day 6: Crayons 

  • Exploring creative sketching with crayons and adding texture and colorful accents to sketches.

Day 7: Mixed Media 

  • Scanning, printing, and re-sketching drawings.

Day 8: Digital Exhibition 

  • Scanning and digitizing the sketching outcomes and organizing and presenting a digital exhibition of photographic Sketches.

Items to buy for this class

Sketching Supplies:

  • Pencils
  • Charcoal sticks and pencils
  • Drawing pens
  • Ink bottles or ink pens
  • Watercolor brushes and palette
  • Watercolor paints (a variety of colors)
  • Crayons (oil pastels or soft pastels)
  • Sketchbooks with heavyweight paper
  • Polaroid film
  • A sketch journal with good thick paper (for traveling)
  • Photographs you would like to sketch from
  • Polaroid Camera (if available)

On occasion, there might be additional materials to purchase and bring in as advised by the instructor.

Nada El Kharashi

Nada Elkharashi (b.1995) is an interdisciplinary research designer creating thought-provoking experiences at the intersection of cultural advancement, positive change, and human emotionality. With 6+ years of experience, she leads design innovations in daily objects, furniture, installations, storytelling, and more. Nada defies conventional sustainability, forging a relationship between individuals and positive changes through her use of form, material, and perceived function. Her interactive works challenge perceptions, encouraging conversations and local insights. Holding a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Design Studies—MFA and a Bachelor’s in Interior Design Honors—BFA. She received multiple awards and international recognition for her works exhibited in worldwide venues.
