About this class

From Thread to Thought: Rug Design for Contemporary Creatives is an immersive masterclass offered by VCUarts Qatar in collaboration with Kahhal 1871 and Doha Design District (DDD). This one-of-a-kind experience takes participants on a journey through the process of rug making.

Guided by the expertise of Kahhal 1871 one of the region’s most iconic and historic rug houses, participants will explore the full lifecycle of a creative product: from concept development and sustainable material selection to hands-on techniques like hand-knotting, tufting, and weaving. The course blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design strategies and introduces participants to the fundamentals of product storytelling, branding, and luxury market positioning.

Participants will leave the workshop with:

  • A completed, small-scale rug design sample
  • A portfolio-ready concept presentation
  • Certified Digital Badge issued by VCUarts Qatar

Class Outline

Session 1: Design Thinking & Concept Development

Objectives:

  • Introduce the creative process through design thinking
  • Explore user-centered design approaches
  • Build foundational mood boards and concept narratives

Topics Covered:

  • Introduction to rug design: tradition meets innovation
  • The role of user context: where and for whom the rug is made
  • Mood board creation and inspiration sourcing

Session 2: Material Exploration & Technical Foundations

  • Understand fibers, yarns, and foundational textile techniques
  • Apply visual storytelling principles through sketching and design

Session 3: Tufting, Weaving & Sustainable Practice

Mohamed El Kahhal


Mohamed El Kahhal is the Managing Director at KAHHAL 1871. In 2015 after having completed his finance degree in the US, the youngest Kahhal returned to Egypt with a singular vision to take helm of the family heritage company and reinvent it whilst maintaining an 150 year-old legacy as the highest-quality provider of bespoke handmade rugs for luxury residential and hospitality interiors. Since taking up tenure at KAHHAL 1871, Mohamed has demonstrated a consistently creative vision for the company, overseeing all aspects from design & production to retail concept.
