About this class

This interdisciplinary course integrates visual storytelling, design, and artistic expression. Participants explore the interconnectedness of these disciplines through hands-on projects, learning composition, color theory, typography, and visual storytelling.

From film posters to multimedia installations, participants express their artistic choices. Utilizing VCUarts Qatar resources, participants create elements for film projects, adding to their portfolios. By course end, participants exhibit their comprehensive understanding of integrated visual arts.

Class Outline

Week 1

  • Introduction to Integrated Visual Arts
  • Course Overview and expectations
  • Initial project: Personal visual narrative

Week 2

  • Fundamentals of Film
  • Introduction to film production: scripting, storyboarding, and shooting
  • Workshop: Creating a short film


Week 3

  • Fundamental design principles: color, typography, composition
  • Graphic design tools and software
  • Project: Designing a film poster


Week 4

  • Visual Art Techniques
  • Exploration of traditional and contemporary art techniques
  • Studio session: Creating an integrated art piece
  • Storytelling project: Class begins their first phase of production for their short film (includes script writing, value drawing, etc)


Week 5

  • Storytelling project: Second phase of production (filming and gathering materials to edit)
  • Workshop: Creating an experimental video or art piece


Week 6

  • Interdisciplinary Critique
  • Methods of analyzing and critiquing interdisciplinary works
  • Refining projects (Moving on the third phase to refine the projects)


Week 7

  • Project planning and development
  • Progress presentations and feedback
  • Moving on to the final stage of post production
  • Begin preparation for posters (done in class)

Week 8

  • Presentation of final projects
  • Class exhibition: curating and displaying integrated works
  • Course wrap-up and reflection

Items to buy/have for this class

  • Art supplies for mixed media projects (Paper, clay, mini canvas and acrylic paint)
  • iPad and iPad pencils

Occasionally, additional materials may need to be purchased and brought in as directed by the instructor.

Moom Thahinah

Moom Thahinah is a graduate of Northwestern University, having earned a BSc in Media and Communications in 2022. She continued her academic journey at VCUQ, where she obtained an MFA in 2024.

Driven by a passion for interdisciplinary design, she continuously explores the boundaries of the medium of filmmaking, utilizing artistic elements to evoke emotions and convey compelling messages.

Her interests primarily lie in fiction and comedy, where she navigates the terrain of storytelling to evoke specific emotions, such as nostalgia and embracing barriers.

Her expertise extends to strategic communication, to craft impactful narratives and forge meaningful connections with audiences.
