The Medical and Healthcare Humanities are an interdisciplinary field concerned with the synergy between artistic and humanistic modes of thought – including the liberal arts (philosophy, ethics, history, comparative literature and religion), social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, health geography) and the arts (design, literature, theater, film, and visual arts) – and health, well-being, medicine, and medical education.

Many areas of the humanities are now employed clinically, such as human-centered design and expressive therapies/creative arts therapies. Science, technology, and medicine have additionally influenced the practices of many artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, James Turrell, Damien Hirst, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, John James Audubon, Thomas Eakins, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.
