Did you know that Joshua Rodenberg and Erika Tsuchiya from our Innovative Media Studios (IMS) are building a synth (synthesizer) music library at VCUarts Qatar?

They are featured in the latest edition of London-based Attack magazine, which is dedicated to dance music production and culture. In it they discuss the electronic (synth) music scene in Qatar, their plans for the synth library, and the sound design class which they teach at VCUarts Qatar.

“We want to expand the creative resources and outlook of this school and the synth library is part of building a resource where students can explore and incorporate sound and visual synthesis as part of their creative practice,” Joshua explains to Attack.

Erika and Joshua have extensive backgrounds in electronic music and media.

Erika previously managed artist projects and provided technical support for corporate, educational and entertainment industry clients such as the BBC, Samsung, Sony, and Saatchi. Her musical collaborations include Aux 88 on Puzzlebox Records in Detroit, MI, and currently as part of ALKA on VeryRecords, USA.

Joshua is the head of the IMS. In 2022 he released an EP, titled “Down by the Abbey” and in 2019 an LP called “Cognizant”, both on Off Records from Belgium. Josh does sound design for independent films and small gaming projects such as Federico Cuatlacuatl’s “Copan En Espera” and Amy Young’s “Belonging to the Soil” virtual reality experience.

The IMS, which has everything from an editing suite and virtual reality station to a multi-purpose production studio, vocal recording booth and photo studio, is dedicated to extended media education, the research of emerging technologies and creative exploration. It also offers sound design courses for our students, faculty, staff and alumni.
