Biography

Aissa Deebi is a practicing artist, curator, and writer. His practice deals with issues of art and polities, with an emphasis on cultural migration, diaspora, exile, postcolonialism, history.

His work has been exhibited internationally including The Palestinian Museum, Palestine; Art Dubai, UAE; Space Kugler, Geneva, Switzerland; Birziet University Museum; Darb 1718; 55 Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy; Çanakkale Biennale, Turkey; Berlin Art Laboratory, Germany; Haifa Museum of Art; The Queens Museum of Art in New York; and Tanit Art Gallery, Beirut. Deebi is an author of “ Shatat”, a study of the Arab diaspora as a creative space (published in Arabic, Raya Publishing house, Sharjah, Haifa, Cairo). Deebi contributes regularly to the Arabic cultural media.

Deebi has held various academic leadership positions including the Chair of the Department of  Art and Design at Montclair State University, in the US; he was the Founder and Director of the Visual Cultures Program at the American University in Cairo; a Visiting Reader in Contemporary Art Middle East at Birmingham City University, in the UK; and a Visiting international faculty at Cedim, EstudiosSuperiores de Diseño de Monterrey, Mexico.

Deebi works between his studio in Geneva, Switzerland, and VCUarts Qatar where he is also the Director of the Painting + Printmaking department, and an Associate professor of Art.
