The event is designed for students interested in learning about what it takes to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in Design Studies from VCUQatar. The evening will begin with an introduction and presentation by the MFA faculty. This will be followed by a Q&A session with MFA faculty and graduate students in the program as well as informal discussions.
In addition to providing information about the program, faculty admissions staff will be available to discuss portfolio and other application details. Prospective students will also be taken on a tour of the state-of-the-art MFA design facilities that include a Media Lab, 3-D Fabrication Lab, General Library and the Materials Library.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to view current MFA student work on display as well as the MFA Thesis exhibition which showcases the work of the designers of VCUQatar’s Master of Fine Arts class of 2013.
The thesis projects investigate a specific issue or problem in design. They have been synthesized through the development of a design process, investigative research and an individual project of complex scale and scope. “They demonstrate the innovation, spirit and dedication of the designers, who engaged in numerous critiques by faculty, visiting artists, and their peers to develop compelling bodies of work,” says Pornprapha Phatanateacha, associate director of the MFA program. The MFA Thesis exhibition runs until 17 January, 2013 in Room 380 at VCUQatar.
The MFA in design studies is the first graduate design program in the Gulf region. Placed amidst a great transformation of the state of Qatar, the program gives students a unique chance to both learn from this historical process and to influence its future development.
