Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar and NBK Fashions ZAI present Young Designers of VCUQatar - fashion design alumna Roqaya Al Thani and student Selina Farooqui.

The trunk show will be held on 28th January from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM and on 29th January from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM at the ZAI building on Salwa Road.

Roqaya Al-Thani graduated from VCUQatar in 2009 with a double major in graphic design and fashion design. This young Qatari designer’s label is inspired by Arabic culture and her aim is to create timeless ready-to-wear garments “that carry a hint of our tradition tied with a little modernism.” She will be showcasing her collection at the trunk show on both days. Ms Al-Thani also sells her collection online through Facebook.

The other young designer is VCUQatar fashion design student Selina Farooqui who will be graduating this year. Her first collection was sold last season exclusively at the Cugini boutique on the Pearl and she will be showing there again this fall. More recently she launched her own label Selina Farooqui. “It is important that my clothes are wearable, yet still unique, detailed, and make a woman feel beautiful and confident.” She wants her clothes to transport the wearer somewhere, to another country, another world, “with a hint of fantasy and dream,” she says adding her collection at the trunk show will take us on an adventurous trip to exotic India.

The ‘Young Designers of VCUQatar’ trunk show came about when ZAI contacted Melanie McClintock from VCUQatar’s fashion department to talk about showcasing work by VCUQatar’s students and alumni. “I saw it as a great opportunity, met with ZAI and have been planning this for the past few months,” said Ms McClintock who hopes the event will become regular and showcase the work of other VCUQatar students and alumni.

Ms Al-Thani and Ms Farooqui have both been recipients of VCU’s Golden Needle Award given to the most outstanding student graduating in fashion design. Their collections will be presented during the trunk show on both days and will be available at Zai one week post the trunk show.

A Trunk Show is a special sale in which vendors present merchandise directly to select customers at a retail location or another unique venue. It allows the customer to preview and/or purchase merchandise before it is made available to the public, in the presence of the actual designers.

‘Young Designers of VCUQatar’ takes place on 28 January from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM and on 29 January from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM at the Zai building on Salwa Road; the event is open to the public.
