Sound and video art, emerging media installation and sculpture
Joshua Rodenberg is Associate Professor and Head of Innovative Media Studios at VCUarts Qatar. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Indiana and a Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University in Craft and Material Studies.
As a sound and video artist, Joshua develops research practices centered on data sonification, environmental sound art, and the sonic properties of natural oscillations. His work investigates how complex datasets, buoy readings, and environmental phenomena can be translated into immersive audio and multimedia experiences. He frequently collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, including marine biologists, material practitioners, and fellow artists, to create experimental films, sound installations, VR experiences, and multimedia works. His sound design has been featured in artistic films such as Federico Cuatlacuatl’s 2024 film Tiemperos, and his research has been presented at major international platforms including Ars Electronica, ICMC, ISEA, and CTM Festival.
Joshua’s international residency practice includes participation in the Arctic Circle Artist Residency program and research partnerships exploring data-driven creativity at institutions across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. In 2024, he received the VCU Quest Fund research grant to support his Arctic-focused sound art research. At VCUarts Qatar, he shapes innovative curricula and mentors students in sound design, creative coding, and experimental media production while actively building collaborative networks between local craft communities, international artists, and research institutions.
His practice is driven by a commitment to innovation, exploration, and the belief that emerging technologies and artistic research can illuminate urgent questions about ecology, data, and human connection.
