SFD01) Fashion Design: Sewing (Basics)

About this class

This course is designed to provide a brief creative fashion design process from design to construction, focusing on the basic sewing techniques with a brief overview of fabrics and patterns. The focus is on collarless basic-daywear dress or basic Abaya sample construction for participants with little or no sewing experience.

Course Outlines

Introduce creative fashion design processes, roles of fashion professionals, and professional fashion vocabularies
Introduce basic construction tools and supplies, followed by exploring basic sewing techniques
Discuss measurements, basic design details, fabric choices, and cutting
Introduce a master pattern and types of seam treatments
Introduce a couple of design details among cuffs, pockets, hem, facing, or plackets
Continued exploring design details
Discuss finishes: hand stitching and fitting
Complete at least one sample garment

Items to buy for this class

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises, please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:

Bring two garments to analyze (preferably one top and one bottom, one-piece dress or abaya) for the first class
Steel dressmaking pins (not glass-headed or plastic headed pins) and pin holder
Measuring tape (60 inches long)
Fabric scissors and paper scissors
Small pointed trimming scissors
Pinking shears (optional)
Magic scotch tape
Needle-pointed tracing wheel
4H and 2B pencils, as well as a sharpener
Tailor’s chalk
Fine-liner pens (4 red, 2 blue, and 2 black recommended)
Pattern notcher, awl, and pattern hooks
Hand sewing needles and thread spools (at least black and white) for sewing
Set of L-square, hip curve, French curve, and vary form curve
18inch clear plastic ruler with grids
Muslin, oak tag, pattern paper, and stuffed arm (can be discussed more in details on the first day if necessary)

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Instructors

Yang Soon Ju

Yang Soon Ju (Elizabeth) is an interdisciplinary designer and entrepreneur with an MFA in Design Studies and a BFA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar.
She has engaged with numerous projects/events and developed designs/collections in partnership with community organizations: to name a few, Doha Film Institute, Tim MakowerArchitects, Sidra Medicine/Hospital, Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition, Doha Festival City, and Galeries Lafayette and Tasmeem Biennial Art and Design Conference. Her entrepreneurial positions in Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Qatar span two decades, ranging from founding an English-speaking school; textile trading, and designing/producing household items and specialty clothing, as well as marketing those products, to consulting in financial auditing/ bookkeeping and business management. In addition to her entrepreneurial initiatives, she currently teaches in the Fashion Design department and Continuing Education and Community/Continuing education programs at VCUarts Qatar.
