This is a three-week course that will dive into the fundamentals of creating visually stunning concept landscapes using Adobe Illustrator. You will practice and learn the basics of design, draw various iterations, and become comfortable with all the steps involved in the concept art process and illustrator- from the initial idea to the final concept.
The theme will revolve around the idea of culture, architecture, landscape, and history of Doha. Participants will have full freedom to create the landscape that inspires and resonates with them.
Week 1
Lesson 01: Introduction to Illustration and fundamentals of Adobe Illustrator.
Activity: At the end of the session students will be asked to research a cultural site/ couple of sites that they would like to bring to life as an illustrated landscape or poster.
Lesson 02: Visualising Illustrative Styles – Minimalism
Activity: Students will share their research in a class presentation and decide on a direction. For the next class assignment, students will be asked to create a minimal illustration of their selected cultural site.
Week 2
Lesson 03: Visualising Illustrative Styles – Maximalist
Activity: Students will share their initial sketch of a minimal design in class. For the next class assignment, students will be asked to create a maximalist illustration of their selected cultural site.
Lesson 04: Colour Theory, Gradients & Presentation of Maximalist Design.
Activity: Students will share their sketches and finalize in class the composition they would like to go with. Work will begin by illustrating the compositions and artworks.
Week 3
Lesson 05: Typography in Design
Activity: Feedback sessions on the artwork process.
Lesson 06: Branding yourself as an Illustrator/ Careers in Illustration
Activity: Presentation of the final artworks.

Hazem Asif
Hazem Asif is an interdisciplinary graphic designer, digital illustrator, and storyteller from Lahore, Pakistan. He graduated from VCUArts Qatar with a BFA in Graphic Design (2016) and MFA in Design studies (2018). In his art and design research practice, Hazem focuses on speculative design, south Asian futurism, world-building, and design fiction to create new possible futures with social and political relevance using design-inspired activism. He has worked as an illustrator with a various local and international clientele including The Lancet HIV, Harper Collins, Macmillan Tor Publishing, Al-Jazeera Media Network, Doha Film Institute, Center for African Studies in Capetown, and for various universities across Education City in Doha, Qatar. His work has been featured on BBC, Express Tribune, Al-Jazeera and Qatar Foundation. He currently works as a science illustrator at Lahore University of Management Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan.
