About this class

The students will explore various methods of drawing a still life set up with an observational twist. They will learn to observe their surroundings with the intent of drawing. This will greatly enhance their perceptive focus, making them truly see shapes, patterns, perspectives, colors, shadows, contours, and interactive details. Drawing the space around the still life will help them understand perspective which is crucial in interior design, also laying out the composition on paper is crucial in graphic design, drawing different fabrics is crucial in fashion design and observational drawing is crucial in painting and printmaking. The main reason why students should join this class is that it will give them freedom with the expression of their drawings in order to inspire confidence in their techniques and art styles.

Sumam Ismael Azzam

Making art expresses Sumam’s imagination in ways words cannot fulfill. He likes creating art because it challenges his visual and critical thinking skills. Sumam is heavily inspired by pop culture, and doing figurative drawings. His influences come from comics, video games, and movies. As his drawing skills developed, he became more familiar with the significance of art, and how it welcomes endless possibilities with the freedom of expression.

After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, School of the Arts in 2015, Sumam continued working with portraiture and figurative paintings/ illustrations. The work produced was a series of academic style paintings, where the use of shadow and light were explored on figure(s). The figures he painted were a combination of self-portraits and friends. After doing academic style paintings, he started exploring surreal concepts in his work.

Realism has always been a strong influence of portraying Sumam’s work, however his interest is constantly shifting. He enjoys trying out new methods of painting and drawing, whether he uses paint, charcoal, graphic tablets or any other medium. He does not limit himself to a certain method. Sumam always strives to make work that connects to people on some level, whether it is in a direct or indirect way.
