Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), a Qatar Foundation partner university, officially welcomed its incoming class during a vibrant New Student Convocation held on campus. The event marked the beginning of an exciting journey for new students joining one of the region’s most innovative and diverse creative communities.
The program opened with a welcome address from Director of Student Affairs, Sarah Faheem, who set the tone for the occasion by emphasizing a message of belonging, creativity, and new beginnings.
“To all our new students: welcome home,” Faheem said. “You are now part of a diverse and inspired community where ideas are encouraged, differences are celebrated, and creativity leads the way.”
Following Faheem’s introduction, Dr. Matthew Nelson, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, welcomed the Class of 2029, encouraging them to embrace this new chapter with courage and curiosity.
“This is your community now,” said Dr. Nelson. “Say yes. Get involved. Meet people who are different from you. Try something unexpected. These are the moments that shape your experience — and often, they’re the ones you remember most.”
In Dean Amir Berbić’s welcoming remarks he reminded students of the importance of academic excellence, leadership, and extracurricular engagement as vital components of their development, “Your creative passions will drive you,” he said, “By achieving excellence in your studies and expanding your horizons through extracurricular and leadership opportunities, you lay the groundwork for a successful and impactful career.”
The ceremony also featured an address from Anusheh Zaman, an alumna from the Class of 2019 (Art History), who reflected on her own student journey and encouraged the new class to make the most of the opportunities ahead.
The day’s highlight came as students exited the Atrium to take part in the Rams Spirit Walk, a newly introduced tradition symbolizing their formal induction into the VCUarts Qatar community. Guided by Dr. Nelson and cheered on by faculty, staff, and peers, the students processed through Saffron Hall.
Each student received a New Student Convocation stole, a symbol of welcome, tradition, and pride, as they walked through a ceremonial archway.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo and a celebratory reception where the VCUarts Qatar community extended personal welcomes to the newest Rams.
