Winners of VCUarts Qatar’s Undergraduate Summer Art and Design Competition 2020 Announced

The competition was modeled on a similar initiative announced by the United Nations during the pandemic, when it issued a global call to creatives around the world for entries to support and reinforce messages on how to stay safe, and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

VCUarts Qatar recently announced the winners of the university’s Undergraduate Summer Art and Design Competition 2020.   

Gayatri Maelathil and Afreena Niaz were awarded first and second prizes respectively in the Graphic Installation category. Reem Selo and Shima Aeinehdar were placed first and second in the Artwork (digital/print) section, while Selma Fejzullaj and Maryan Mohammoud won the first and second positions for their Creative Writing entries. Reflecting that spirit, VCUarts Qatar invited entries from undergraduate students for an art and design competition, as a response to the unprecedented challenges that the wider community were facing.

Following the official call, VCUarts Qatar undergraduates submitted original projects or proposals on a range of themes such as community projects, research, original prose or poetry, artwork, design, sculpture, photography and film – all relating to human experiences during the pandemic.

The submitted entries were judged on impact, feasibility, innovation, originality, effect on human behavior and aesthetics.

The competition was organized by the department of Research and Development.
