Week 2 & 3: Program Major: KINETIC IMAGING

About this class

This is a major course for the Summer Art and Design Program 2025. This course cannot be taken separately.

In this course, participants will be invited to unravel the exciting world of Kinetic Imaging—a dynamic fusion of art and motion. As Kinetic Imaging is a new discipline introduced at VCUarts Qatar starting in Fall 2024, this program will embark on a creative adventure, delving into various aspects of kinetic art, creative coding and moving images. Participants will be provided with a solid foundation, combining theoretical insights with hands-on projects that encourage experimentation and innovation. 

Class Outline

Classes 1 & 2: Introduction to Kinetic Imaging

• Overview of Kinetic Imaging and its applications
• Exploration of contemporary kinetic artwork
• Introduction to basic animation principles
• Workshop: Ideas Bank exercise + brainstorming session.

Classes 3 & 4: Moving images : Video + Gifs

• Understanding video footage + gif techniques
• Workshop : Shoot simple video footage
• Workshop: Creating a gif
• Introduction to basic video editing

Classes 5 & 6: Konnectivity

• Workshop: Simple circuits connections.
• Workshop: Light pulse simple animation

Classes 7 & 8: Intro to Creative Coding

• Introduction to basic coding
• Workshop: Create a simple interactive artwork using HTML
• Workshop: Create a simple interactive artwork using JavaScript
• Discussion: The intersection of coding and art

Classes 9 & 10: Final Project and Presentation

• Discussion: How to artists and designers think?
• Work on final projects with guidance from the instructor
• Presentation and showcase of final course outcomes

Materials needed

Please note: Do not purchase materials until VCUQatar has sent final course confirmation.

Participants are encouraged to have the following materials:

• Laptops or computers for video editing and software applications
• Creative Cloud ( Adobe Pr + Adobe Ae + Adobe Ps + Adobe Ai)
• Phone Camera
• A Sketchbook + Pencils + Pens
• Circuit Kit * This will be provided by VCUarts Qatar
