About this class

This advanced interior design course is tailored for participants eager to deepen their understanding of spatial design. Over the course of 6 weeks, the class explores essential architectural elements, the interplay of form and function, and the influence of cultural observations on design. Participants will learn to design multifunctional spaces, understand the use of volumes, natural and artificial lighting to activate different functions, and develop practical skills in drawing floor plans and elevations. Emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice, this course offers a creative dive into interior design.

Class Outline

Week 1 : Understanding Forms and Architectural Elements Technical drawings

  • Introduce form and space in interior design.
  • Study architectural elements & notions and their impact on space.

Week 2 : Cultural Influences and Dual-Function Structures

  • Explore how cultural factors influence design.
  • Research and practice.

Week 3 : Volumes and Air circulation

  • Understand the significance of volumes in architecture.
  • Discuss how volumes convey different meanings and functions.
  • Focus on air circulation and achieving function through architectural elements.

Week 4: Spatial Envelope and Lighting Design

  • Study the spatial envelope and the effects of light.
  • Learn how to create movement and emotion in a space through light and form.

Week 5: Dual-Function Structures

  • Explore to Dual- Function structures and circulation of space.


Week 6: Final Presentations and Reflection

  • Final presentations of projects.
  • Peer and instructor feedback.
  • Reflect on the course’s key takeaways and future applications.

Nada El Kharashi

Nada Elkharashi (b.1995) is an interdisciplinary research designer creating thought-provoking experiences at the intersection of cultural advancement, positive change, and human emotionality. With 6+ years of experience, she leads design innovations in daily objects, furniture, installations, storytelling, and more. Nada defies conventional sustainability, forging a relationship between individuals and positive changes through her use of form, material, and perceived function. Her interactive works challenge perceptions, encouraging conversations and local insights. Holding a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Design Studies—MFA and a Bachelor’s in Interior Design Honors—BFA. She received multiple awards and international recognition for her works exhibited in worldwide venues.
