Sarah Hassan Al-Ansari
Lecturer

Sarah Al-Ansari is a Qatari-American artist who earned her BFA in Painting from Middle Tennessee State University in 2015. Sarah has exhibited her art locally and worked as a part-time illustrator for Qatar’s branch of Bloomsbury Publishing in 2012. After graduation, she started to work as an intern at the Virginia Commonwealth University of Qatar in 2016. She was an artist-in-residence at the Doha Firestation from 2018-19.

She works exclusively in paintings, but has worked in printmaking particularly in etching, and incorporates beading and embroidery into her pieces. Sarah’s works involve a social commentary on her bi-cultural environment and the effect it had on her growing up. She plays with ambiguity, patterning and tension to create a discussion on cultural differences and complex identity.
Her recent works examine a reoccurring water dream that seems to symbolize her bi-cultural experience of belonging and not belonging to one place, and an ethereal representation of herself.
