About this class

Comic enthusiasts will get the chance to learn all the basics of writing and creating a comic of their own. The class will cover a brief history of comics. How to write a story: beginning, middle and end. Creating comics digitally and traditionally. Students who already have a story that they want to write will get the chance to workshop it in the class and have an audience to critique them.

Class Outline

– Author vs Artist
-Writing your story in script format
-Drawing based on a script 
-Outlining your story 
-Storyboarding 
-Creating your comic
-Finalizing comic art and dialogue 
-A brief discussion on publishing options

Materials needed

Items to buy for this class

-Pencil
-Black pens (ball pen, sharpie or artist drawing pen)
-A3 + A4 sketchbooks
– Wacom tablet or iPad with pen (optional)
-Laptops (to edit on Adobe programs)

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Instructors

Roda Al-Thani
Lecturer

Roda Al-Thani is a Qatari Graphic designer based in Doha, Qatar. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar with a BFA in Graphic Design. Her work ranges from game design to publications and posters. During her four years in VCUQ, she received several awards among them are the Critic’s Circle award for her Senior Showcase and the 2015 World Men’s Handball Championship Mascot design. Since then she co-founded a design studio called asterism studio and graduated in 2018 with an MFA in Visual Narrative from School of Visual Arts New York.
