About this class

This short course offers a captivating exploration of robotics, focusing on the magic of DC motors. Participants will immerse themselves in hands-on projects, bringing miniature robots to life, and unlocking the secrets of motorized creations. This workshop emphasizes customization, encouraging students to craft unique robots with personalized movements and styles, all without the need for programming.

Class Outline

Day 1 : Introduction to Robotics and Electrical circuits

  • Introduction to the course and participants
  • Icebreaker activities
  • Overview of robotics and its applications
  • Introduction to non-programming aspects of robotics
  • Demonstrating how electric circuits work
  • Hands-on activity: Creating simple circuits using mini kits

Day 2: Basics of DC Motors and Motorized Project

  • Introduction to DC Motors
  • Basics of DC motors (Types)
  • Understanding motorized movements
  • Mini Car Project : Solar Power and Battery
  • Hands-on activity: Building a mini car powered by a solar cell
  • Understanding different type of power source

Day 3: Introduction to Mini Bots

  • Building small bots and moveable objects (e,g Spiders, planes etc)
  • Understanding how mechanical movements work using motors
  • Adding Switches (On/Off feature)

Day 4 : Mini Robot Walking Project (Part 1)

  • Basics of Mechanical Movement
  • Understanding how mechanical movements work
  • Introduction to walking mechanisms
  • Building a simple walking robot 01
  • Mini Robot Walking Project
  • Building a simple walking robot 02(character)
  • Testing and improving the walking mechanism

Day 5: Mini Robot Walking Project (Part 2) + Showcasing

  • Mini Robot Walking Projector: Continue + Wrap up
  • Show & tell (Mini Exhibition) at the end of the session

  • *Gun glue might be used in the project; however, TAs will be handling the usage for the students.

Fatima Nazir

Fatima Nazir is an accomplished creative design specialist, BFA Graphic Design graduate and a Valedictorian with university honors from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar). Besides her design practice, her versatility and passion for design allowed her to take on various roles, including in-house department designer for VCUarts Qatar, Teaching Assistant, creative software workshops leader, and exhibitions/event designer and curator. With a strong foundation in design principles and a keen eye for detail, she excels at creating visually striking and impactful designs across multiple mediums. With over a decade of experience in the design field,  she has collaborated with a diverse range of clients, consistently delivering exceptional results. Her particular interest in visual narrative and storytelling has led her to join VCUarts Qatar as a teaching assistant, enabling her to pass on her expertise to the next generation of creatives.
