12) Fashion Design and Making – Day wear / Evening wear

About this class

Experience and learn the live process of a designer collection development from sketching and draping on croqui, putting down the ideas, drawing 2D fashion flats, selecting the respective textiles, consulting with color techniques, design developed from one thought inspiration and draping on mannequin for selected and consulted designs in the class. Finally developing the design with Fashion Dressmaking processes into your own signature collection of one or two dresses.

The class will be a mix of workshop and lecture series and the students will then design and develop their collections with expertise guidance to a final fashion design production of an evening wear/day wear. The students will finally exhibit their final design collection on the mannequins.
(For the production of the final dress in the class, there will be limited patterns and dress styles available, the designs will be consulted and approved by the instructor to be produced in the class. No Bridal Wears nor Trousers will be involved in designing and production process)
Class is open for everyone from beginners with no sewing experience. There will be slight variations at the production process and selection of textiles of the final designs for the beginner levels which will be consulted by the Instructor in the classes.

Class Outline
  1. Introduction to Fashion Studio
  2. Study about application of each textile to design and knowing about what textile to be used for what garment. A textile swatch guide will be provided to each student for their reference and the student will do a market study about the textiles available for their designs
  3. Textile Draping with different textiles
  4. Consulting with the Designer and Instructor about student inspiration and development of the dress to design
  5. Drawing and draping the respective designs on the Fashion Figure provided
  6. Developing the fashion collection
  7. Developing the fashion collection
  8. Making Fashion Design Color Codes
  9. Developing pattern for the selected design dress after consultation
  10. Fashion Dressmaking Studio, in which students will cut down simple evening wear / day wear (approved by the instructor) from the fabrics selected

Materials needed

  • Other materials and fabrics desired to be bought for the design process would be instructed by the instructor in the class on respective stages of design production

Max.  2.5m of fabric to develop the design will be provided to the students

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Manjulakshmi Bharathan

Manjulakshmi is International Fashion Designer being the first designer from Qatar to have showcased her collection at the New York Fashion Week and listed on the Fashion Calendar of CFDA. Being a Fashion Consultant in the region with an expanded career in Design as Design Educator and Researcher extending into the fields of Fashion Design, Interior Design and Jewelry Design, she has an established career in the design industry and has been teaching in VCUQ since 2005.

She has been working with the design industry in Qatar to develop in its various forms and helping new brands and fashion entrepreneurs to launch their brands into the market with the help of her design studio. She is the Creative Head of her Couture Label @gillsmanjulakshmi and @aadimabygm

She is researching in “Sustainable Design Textiles and lifestyle” and has Masters of Business Administration and Marketing and Bachelors in Costume and Fashion Design. She is also one of the designers who has showcased her bridal and evening wear couture collection at the 7th International Fashion Show and Wedding Exhibition "IWED" in 2014, Mercedes Benz Fashion Show 2016, 1st Qatar Fashion Show at the Shop Qatar 2017, NYFW 2018 and has been invited for the Paris Fashion Week 2018.
