12) Fashion Dress Making – Design your Dresses

About this class

In the class the student will design, sketch and make 4 dress which the student can select from the 6 different dresses designed patterns provided and will focus on sketching on given fashion figure, fashion
garment construction, pattern making, and developing various models based on dress design. they will also be introduced to textiles and techniques.

Students will construct and design garments featuring variation in cuts. Students will develop for themselves 4 DRESSES selected from the A-line, shift, sheath, panel, and princess dresses with their application for these patterns, including fundamentals of design garment making. Classes are based on both practical (workshop) and theoretical (PowerPoint Presentations).

Class Outline
  1. How to take body measurements and measurements from garments; introduction to using sewing machines
  2. Basics about pattern making, for dresses
  3. Fashion Studio: Pattern making dress design 1 (basic dress): using measurements to develop a foundation block
  4. Fashion Studio: Transferring to fabric and sewing
  5. Fashion Studio: Developing the pattern for Dress 2 on pattern sheets and transferring the patterns onto the fabric; preparing the fabric for the design and cutting process
  6. Fashion Studio: finishing of the dresses, necklines and hemlines
  7. Fashion Studio: Developing the pattern for Dress 3 and a Dart Dress on pattern sheets
  8. Fashion Studio: Developing and  transferring the patterns onto the fabric; preparing the fabric for the design and cutting process
  9. Fashion Studio: sewing Dress 3
  10. Fashion Studio: sewing the Dart Dress
  11. Fashion Studio: finishing of the dresses, necklines and hemlines
  12. Fashion Studio: finishing of the dresses, necklines and hemlines

Materials needed

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and to bring them to every class.

  • French curve sets
  • Pencil, 2B
  • Small scissors
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • T- square ruler

Optional: If you have your own sewing machine, feel free to bring it. You will be able to get to know it much better during the course.

There may be more materials to be purchased and brought in as the class progresses, i.e., fabric for the dresses; your lecturer will give you the necessary guidance.

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Manjulakshmi Bharathan

Manjulakshmi is International Fashion Designer being the first designer from Qatar to have showcased her collection at the New York Fashion Week and listed on the Fashion Calendar of CFDA. Being a Fashion Consultant in the region with an expanded career in Design as Design Educator and Researcher extending into the fields of Fashion Design, Interior Design and Jewelry Design, she has an established career in the design industry and has been teaching in VCUQ since 2005.

She has been working with the design industry in Qatar to develop in its various forms and helping new brands and fashion entrepreneurs to launch their brands into the market with the help of her design studio. She is the Creative Head of her Couture Label @gillsmanjulakshmi and @aadimabygm

She is researching in “Sustainable Design Textiles and lifestyle” and has Masters of Business Administration and Marketing and Bachelors in Costume and Fashion Design. She is also one of the designers who has showcased her bridal and evening wear couture collection at the 7th International Fashion Show and Wedding Exhibition "IWED" in 2014, Mercedes Benz Fashion Show 2016, 1st Qatar Fashion Show at the Shop Qatar 2017, NYFW 2018 and has been invited for the Paris Fashion Week 2018.
