About this class

Learn the basics of structures, building process, procurement, and sustainable principles to ensure that your designs can be built.  With a focus on the specific challenges and environmental factors of Doha, students will:
1. Understand how design features impact project costs
2. Understand how design features and materials impact project sustainability
3. Learn how a project site affects design considerations
4. Understand the procurement environment in Doha
5. Understand the building process from start to finish
6. Understand design considerations particular to Muslims

Class Outline

Sessions 1-2: Introduction to the building process, from plan to design, to bid, to managing contractors, to finishing, the challenges and best practices of designing in Doha

Session 3: Designing with materials and structures that are cost-effective.

Session 4: Designing with materials and structures that improve sustainability.

Session 5: Procurement: specific challenges and best practices of procurement in Doha

Sessions 6: Designing for context: introduction to culture and manners of Muslims, and ensuring the design is fit for this context

Session 7-9: Practicum: refining a design.  Starting with a design scenario in interior design, architecture, or exhibition design, students will develop design solutions that are cost-effective, maximize sustainability, and circumvent procurement issues.

Session 10-12: Practicum: Advocacy.  Using their design solution, students will practice presenting and advocating for their design choices.

Lecturer

Sabir Nu’Man holds an MA in Architecture from Savannah College in Art and Design and an MSc. in Architecture and Urban Planning in Muslim Societies from HBKU.  With five years of experience designing and managing architecture and exhibition building projects in Doha and 10 years of experience in the United States, Sabir has a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to design successful projects fit for their context. Sabir specializes in Islamic architecture and design and sustainable building practices.
