23) Poster Design

Poster Design 482 480 80

About this class

After a brief look back into history, you will learn skills and explore the creative process that lead to the creation of a poster either to promote an event or merely for decorative use. To do this, you will use recent tools, such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. By sketching ideas, choosing the subject, and applying the fonts and imagery to convey a message, you will conceive a poster from beginning to end, including a final print that you will most probably want to frame and put up on your wall!

Class Outline
  1. Brief overview of poster design in history and the Rule of Fives: interesting to watch from 30cm, 3 meters and 30 meters away
  2. Brainstorm, Define the approach (style, budget, message…)
  3. Combine type and image into the template/grid
  4. Explore treatments, variations with choice of colors, how to make your poster stand out
  5. Mock ups and preprint
  6. Individual project rationale presentation and group exhibit/discussion of all projects

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class.

  • An idea box, clippings of pictures, fonts or illustrations: An actual box or file or plastic pocket with images that inspire you. This is a bit like a Pinterest board, but a physical one. A real Pinterest board accessible on your own phone or iPad would do as well. This will help us engage in a conversation about where you want your project to go visually, and we can discuss styles while sorting images by color or message or typography or….
  • A computer with necessary software and font will be available in class.

Some additional materials may be needed depending on the creative angle chosen by the student – as per instruction during the course.

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Where to buy your materials

Most of the materials are available from any art supply shop, for example:
  • Cass Art (Fire station): Community Classes students get a 15% discount upon presenting the registration ticket
  • Jarir Bookstore: on Rayyan Road or Salwa Road
  • Color Note: on Al Nasser Street
