About this class

Decoupage is an incredibly simple way to jazz up objects and give them some zing. If you have learned cutting and pasting in school – and you undoubtedly did – you can easily learn this technique and create a very distinctive object  from a common piece.

You chose and bring an object to transform and images to transfer onto it.

Class Outline

First day:

  • Introduction; getting to know objects, materials and examples of work.
  • Preparing objects to work on, by painting the surface in one color
  • Cutting out (using either scissors or a craft knife) images from wrapping paper, or decorated napkins
  • Pasting images on object using glue and brushes and letting it dry

Second day:

  • Adding some decorations (and the finishing lacquer layer for finished pieces)
  • Get creative working on the new surface using stamps, gold / silver paint, acrylic paint etc                                                    

Third day:

  • Keep working on your piece or start new piece
  • Adding stenciling techniques and stamping prints
  • Finishing the surface with a protective layer of lacquer

Items to buy for this class

Participants are required to buy their own materials beforehand and bring them to every class

Materials:

  1. Bring in an object  with a smooth surface that you want to transform, i.e. a wooden tray, a card board box or a wooden box, a pot, a dish, a glass plate or a glass, a metal tray, any piece of porcelain or clay ware, plastic, or a flat and smooth stone
  2. Bring in at least one, two or more of the following materials to transform  the surface of your object: Patterned and colorful napkins, maps, stamps, wrapping papers, paper money from exotic countries, stationary with images – any thin type of paper is ok, Stencil or template, gold / silver paint

Be creative!      

Bring in the following tools

  • Scissors
  • Cutting knife
  • Sponge  

Other Materials will be provided to students in class as required

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Aida Naji
Lecturer

Aida is an artist who studied art and design at the Academy of Art in Cairo, Egypt. She has developed her art skills over the years by taking many courses including watercolor, silk screen printing, and other printing styles. Her natural talent in freestyle drawing has helped her in her many courses and lessons.

She has wide experience in teaching art and has exhibited her own work frequently.
