Associate Curator of Campus Projects

Summary

VCUarts Qatar invites applications for the position of Associate Curator of Campus Projects to join The Gallery team. Reporting to the Head of Gallery (Curator), this role provides essential curatorial, research, and programming support for campus-based exhibitions and events. The Associate Curator of Campus Projects will be involved in all aspects of planning, implementing, and promoting Gallery activities within the VCUarts Qatar building, working closely with faculty, students, and staff. Responsibilities include exhibition curation and design, technical installation, event coordination, and communications, as well as support for signature programs such as the senior exhibition, Qatar Week, Crossing Boundaries lecture series, and institutional celebrations. This role requires strong curatorial insight, administrative capability, and a collaborative approach to integrating the Gallery into the academic and creative life of the university.

In line with the State of Qatar hiring guidelines, applicants must hold a valid Qatar residence permit (Qatar ID) to be considered for this position. This position will include certain benefits and is subject to obtaining CEID clearance from the Ministry of Interior for employment at VCUarts Qatar.

Major Activities & Essential Functions

  • Plan and implement exhibitions and public programs across campus spaces including (but not limited to), Senior exhibition, project space exhibitions, community programming, crossing-boundaries lecture series, internal departmental exhibitions, and bespoke institutional events.
  • Develops and manages production schedules for all design elements/layouts, and oversee fabrication and installation, and oversees the design and fabrication of exhibition furniture, object mounts, and display components using wood, metal, fabric, and vinyl.
  • Coordinates maintenance and operations of Gallery spaces with Facilities and ensure proper functioning of building systems
  • Supervises technicians and carpenters to ensure timely and high-quality exhibition execution, as well as, serves as a member of the curatorial and administrative team as directed by the Head of Gallery.
  • Manages incoming and outgoing shipments of artworks, including packing/unpacking, framing/unframing, and installation support, and prepares and manages registration and loan documentation.
  • Maintains Gallery inventory, storage, and maintenance supplies, and ensures compliance with best practices in object handling and display.
  • Researches artists, designers, filmmakers, and performers for exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs.
  • Proposes and advises on internal curatorial projects and contributes to Gallery publications, as well as, liaises with local, regional, and international artists, designers, universities, and institutions.
  • Assists with hosting and coordinating visiting artists and curators, and works closely with academic units to facilitate internal exhibition programming.
  • Leads class visits, VIP tours, and integration of programming into teaching and learning, and advocates for student-led initiatives and engagement with alumni.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises student workers, interns, and security personnel, and develops, proposes, and oversees project budgets and timelines.
  • Tracks expenditures and coordinate honoraria, payments, and service contracts in with the Department of Finance, and coordinate with vendors and collaborators for project needs.
  • Maintains schedules and ensures adherence to university policies.
  • Maintains and updates the Gallery website, and manages student and alumni interviews, featured on Gallery website.
  • Author and distribute newsletters, announcements, and event postings, and maintains mailing lists and outreach databases
  • Collaborates with VCUarts Qatar Communications department on Campus Project marketing and media efforts.
  • Collaborates with VCUarts Qatar Office of Strategic Engagement on event planning and VIP coordination.
  • Develops, manages, and reports on project budgets, staffing, and timelines, and maintains financial and operational records of campus project operations.
  • Ensures timely processing of payments, honoraria, and reimbursements, and tracks and documents project data and support annual reporting efforts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, art, design, museum studies, curatorial studies, or related field required.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and artistic practices.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Ability to use tools such as drills, saws, and 3D printers for exhibition production.
  • Strong project management, budgeting, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams.
