About this class

The Cultural Industries Series is a collaboration between VCUarts Qatar’s Alumni Relations office and the British Council.

1 – Honing Your Personal Statement.

An in-depth look at the important elements in application-making and in how to describe your practice. The artist’s statement is often the first introduction to your work and is the stand-in for you when you are not there. What makes a clear and compelling artist statement? How does it become the cornerstone of the applications and descriptions of your practice?

2 – Applying for International Residencies.

An in-depth look into types of artist residency programs, with examples from the UK and internationally. What options are available for young artists? How do you apply, and what makes a great application?

3 – Understanding the Art Market for Artists.

A look at understanding the different elements of the art market, including art fairs, commercial galleries, private collectors, and digital platforms.  How do artists start to sell their work? What kinds of galleries exist and how do you network with them? How, when, and should you utilize the art market to develop your personal career plan?

Rose Lejeune
Lecturer

Rose Lejeune is a London-based curator exploring collecting, and the development of new distribution infrastructures with a specific interest in context-based, social, and performative practices.

In addition to regular writing and international teaching and public speaking on these topics, in 2020 she founded the innovative cross-sector project Performance Exchange – a program of performances across 20 commercial galleries in London and offering acquisitions to three UK museums. The project offers a large-scale and in-depth opportunity to develop the ways that performance art enters collections. 

Rose is also the Associate Curator for the Delfina Foundation’s Collecting as Practice program – a ground-breaking residency project with private collectors and works with the British Council supporting art’s development in the MENA region.

Rose’s current activities have developed following a decade of extensive experience working with public organizations throughout the UK and in particular, working closely with artists to commission for non-gallery situations. This includes as Curator at Art on the Underground, and Education Projects Curator at Serpentine Gallery, London. Rose holds a BA in Philosophy and Art History, and an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art. Rose is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Curating at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where her research focuses on curatorial frameworks for performance art in, and out, of the art market.
