D03) Fashion Design: Sewing (Basics)

About this class

This course will introduce students to basic professional terminologies for communicating with various fashion professionals, and also the fundamental sewing techniques used in the construction of sample garments for a collection development. Sewing techniques will include cutting, construction, and finishes to create a couple of prototypes in cotton or cotton-type fabrics.

Class Outline

Please note that this schedule is flexible and may change according to needs arising.

1. Introduction to creative fashion design processes, roles of fashion professionals, and professional fashion vocabularies

2. Introduction to basic construction tools and supplies, followed by exploring basic sewing techniques

3. Discussion on measurements, basic design details, fabric choices, and cutting

4. Introduction to types of seam treatments and hand stitching

5. IIntroduction to a couple of design details among sleeves, cuffs, plackets, pockets, or collars

6. Continued exploring design details

7. Discussion on finishes and fitting

8. Complete at least one sample garment as a shirt variation for a collection

Materials needed

Items to buy for this class

In order to fully participate in the practical exercises, please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
• Bring two garments to analyze (preferably one top and one bottom) and a couple of fashion magazines for the first class 
• Steel dressmaking pins (not glass-headed pins) and pin holder
• Measuring tape (60 inches long)
• Fabric scissors and paper scissors
• Small pointed trimming scissors
• Pinking shears (optional)
• Magic scotch tape 
• Needle-pointed tracing wheel
• 4H and 2B pencils, as well as a sharpener
• Tailor’s chalk 
• Fine-liner pens (four red, two blue, and two black recommended)
• Pattern notcher, awl, and pattern hooks
• Hand sewing needles and thread (at least black and white)
• Set of L-square, hip curve, French curve, and vary form curve
• 18-inch clear plastic ruler with grids
• Muslin, oak tag, pattern paper, and stuffed arm (can be discussed more in details on the first day if necessary)

On occasions, there may be some more materials to be bought and brought in if and when advised by the instructor.

Yang Soon Ju
Lecturer

Yang Soon Ju (Elizabeth) is an interdisciplinary designer and entrepreneur with an MFA in Design Studies and a BFA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar.
She has engaged with numerous projects/events and developed designs/collections in partnership with community organizations: to name a few, Doha Film Institute, Tim MakowerArchitects, Sidra Medicine/Hospital, Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition, Doha Festival City, and Galeries Lafayette and Tasmeem Biennial Art and Design Conference. Her entrepreneurial positions in Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Qatar span two decades, ranging from founding an English-speaking school; textile trading, and designing/producing household items and specialty clothing, as well as marketing those products, to consulting in financial auditing/ bookkeeping and business management. In addition to her entrepreneurial initiatives, she currently teaches in the Fashion Design department and Continuing Education and Community/Continuing education programs at VCUarts Qatar.
